So after weeks of moaning, I get an SMS today asying :

'Infrastructure in your area does not support broadband at present. Have recorded your order'

I'm in Northriding (off Bellairs) in a 10 year old complex with phone line etc - and my friend 1km further down down Bellairs has ADSL ... as well as a friend 1km the other direction down Bellairs - both in newer complexes. The exchanges (Pritchard, I think) is about 1km away as well.

Could this message also mean there is simply no space at the exchange - rather than not support?

* It's no wonder they have had less and less land lines for the past decade.

That sounds strange to me.... the fact that your friends have ADSL and presumably are on the same exchange as what you are. I would imagine a shortage of space on the exchange. Maybe phone the sales team and give them your number and ask if you can get ADSL? see what the sales team say.

I've spent hours waiting on the phone and even tried TWO shops in person - but at 30 minutes per person, it'd take 2 hours to get to the front of the queue :/

Ok - so it's a generic message that could mean either/or?

You'd think in that with the area experiencing growth like it is, they'd arrange for an upgrade of the exchange. Bellairs is a fairly long street with thousands of people living there.

What also bugs me, is that prior to 8ta being launched, Vodacom and Cell C were DEAD and MTN *just* worked. Effectivly, I had ZERO option of decent connectivity in Johannesburg ....

Luckily Vodacom helped me get a repeater/booster erected - so I've Vodacom working at my house

Hi Dolby,

If you trust me enough with your tell number, I can check for you if there is no space or no supported exchange,

You can PM me your number if you would like me to check.

Cheers
Keegan

Hi Keegan,

I would - but that's the issue I think : I have no telelphone number as the people before cancelled the line and it's dead

According to the link above, my exchange does support :/

But you would need to get the telephone number reinstated before you can get ADSL. and as far as I am aware I doubt Telkom would run out space for a normal telephone connection

... but then I sit paying for a line I don't want or need until they free up a port?

I applied for the special because the callcentre guy said they'd be able to do everything at once

Lol I think your best bet would be is to go to a Telkom shop/centre and apply for it there, They should be more helpfull.
What does your area number start with example, 031566

For sure no ports . DSL and telephones are 2 different things in the exchange they will put more DSLAMs in the exchange but when is another story

Hi Dolby

Go to this link: http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/utilities/zone.html

Select Gauteng Zone. It will download an Excel file.

Search for your suburb / exchange area and contact the office number of the PLANNING section (those cell numbers are old - all 8ta now).

Start with Randburg and Bryanston and ask whoever answers for the correct contact person for your area. Then ask the person whether there are spare ports in your exchange and for them to try and organise something for you. While at it, ask them to see if the details on your order number is correct. If they cannot help you, ask them for the contact details for their Service Order Management section...

THanks Mickey - will do that!

Lived in Northriding for quite sometime, the exchange does support broadband but with the rapid expansion it never got upgraded. I moved to Wilgeheuwel which is around 7km away and they have exactly the same problem. Telkom isn't planning on doing any expansions either from the looks of it as I've lived in my place now for two years and nada still.

Did you come right Dolby?

Didn't have time today ... and towards the end of the day I got involved in an Apple debate in News ;)

I'll try reach them tomorrow
