Hi Guys

I would like to know if anyone can help me. I applied for an ADSL line two weeks ago for our new house and just heard today that there are no ports available on the exchange. I phoned Telkom and they say that the ETA for the upgrade of the exchange will take place in July only.

I desperately need internet as I provide support for our business from home. I live 45km's from home so in an emergency I cannot sort it out and have to drive to work.

Anyone from Telkom here that may be able to help?

Thanks!

I can't help, except to say I had the same experience, and used 3G as an interim measure.

Hi Melkman, sorry to hear that, i also can't help much, except recommending the 3G as well, you can have a look @8ta's data plans, i don't think there's anyone that beat their prices yet, and i haven't had any problems in terms of the network availability. its worth a try.

Thanks guys, but I tried 3G already using vodacom, mtn and cell-c. The issue is that it's so unstable, hopping between GPRS, Edge, 3G and HSDPA the whole time that I cannot even initiate a VPN connection to my office. It constantly times out even when browsing:(

I also checked out iBurst and to get the equipment costs R2400 if you go on a month to month basis. I also cannot install any wireless equipment as the owner of the house does not want to allow it.

It also looks like 8ta does not have coverage in that area as well according to the coverage map...

I just moved over to ADSL from iBurst. I have a 2MB/s modem for sale if you are interested. Was on the iBurst uncapped options and used to get about 250gig on average a month. Don't how VPN will work on ADSL though.

Drop me a PM is you interested in the modem.

Check out www.wapa.org.za and see if there's a wisp service provider in you area.

Thanks signates. I found someone at work who's husband works for Telkom. He may be able to help, if not, I'll let you know about the modem. VPN works well with ADSL as I've been using it previously for 2 years at my previous house.

Work through an ISP to do the ADSL line application sometimes Telkom have wholesale ports available even if there are no ports available through the telkom call centre.

Thanks, but I tried to do it through MWEB and they told me they can't do anything and to contact Telkom directly. Telkom then told me the same. They don't even want to give me an order number for it...

Meant to say that I don't know how the iBurst will handle VPN as I never used it much for VPN. I did remote desktop from my work ADSL to my home laptop on iBurst and a few times and it was workable. Also used it twice from my home with Teamviewer on a laptop in the UAE and was also workable.

If you don't come right with Telkom I would suggest you first borrow an iBurst modem to test if it will work from your location before buying the hardware.

Cool, thanks man. I'll update this thread once I get an answer.

Hey guys

I finally got this sorted. I contacted ICASA via mail and explained my situation. They then contacted Telkom and gave them two weeks to respond to them on why it will take so long to upgrade the exchange.

Within a week they got back to ICASA and myself and the exchange was upgraded.

So for anyone having issues with Telkom and their ridiculous time frames, mail them at [email protected].

Cheers

Sweet! Thanks alot! I reside in Durbanville myself and have almost the exact same issue as yourself. Been struggling with Telkom since mid Feb.

Mailed ICASA with proof(order numbers etc) just now. :D

Cool man, I hope you come right as well. If you use your internet for work, try to get your company to type out a letter on an official letterhead that states you need the internet. This will also speed things up. This suggestion was made by one of my co-worker's husband's who works for Telkom.

Will even give that a go thanks!

Just a heads up, my internet line is up and running in a matter of 2 weeks (includes migration to afrihost and line upgrade) thanks to this thread. Don't take crap from Telkom, especially in cases like these. Couldn't believe how helpful ICASA was. :D
