Hi all,

I've just been told there aren't any DSLAM ports available in my area(Norwood), such charming freakin' news! So they say they have set up a project to install more ports or something. Please someone tell me this won't take like a year to do?? What are these DSLAM ports btw? Thanx

DSLAM "Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer" is a box that sits in a Telkom exchange where your telephone line plugs into which converts your DSL signal into an ATM (Asynch Transfer Mode) connection to the internet.

Each DSLAM can only support a limited amount of telephone lines or ports.

Is this a common problem, them not having enough ports? Can anyone shed any light on the time of getting my adsl installed if you've had this problem b4? Thanx all

It is becoming more common issue as they advertise and offered the 192K package and more people realize how crap the other offerings for broadband are.

I reckon that their capacity is somewhat lagging behind the demand in some exchanges.

It is also a budgetry issues but if there is demand in your area you could write a letter/petition to Telkom and ICASA and see if they can speed up the process.

Thanx dude, cringe I can see this taking ages, I seriously doubt its to do with budget, the bottom line is they just don't give a **** and never will. ---

Spoke to a lady about the ordering now and she assured me it wouldn't take as long as I first thought which was three months, so I'm holding thumbs

Well, I have been waiting since the beginning of March. And now they tell me it will take at LEAST till 31 July to install. So don't get your hopes up :(

what i cant understand is that with all the money Telkom rakes in, why upgrading exchanges is a "costly" exercise........

Telkom MUST be brought to book on investment in infrastructure VS profits. simple

Expanding ports shouldnt be a big issue, afaik they use very large DSLAM's at most installations - so upgrading a port card to something of higher density (or simply adding anotherone) should be all that is required - unless there really is a *serious* amount of ADSL users on that exchange, which I doubt because they'd have contension issues

heard in the wind that the problem lies in the fact that up to 50% of the ports on the marconi dslams are not working

WTF!!! MArconi?
These guys went bust how many times?
So Telkom perhaps buy inferior technology at discount in order to what/ Further increase profits?
