Have you looked at the toll charged per gantry?
Most of them are over R5 each and they're about 10km apart.
So if you passed 4 gantries going to Johannesburg and 4 leaving Johannesburg you can expect at least a R50 toll charge.

Take a look at the gantry map. All the red dots are toll gantries.

This could be amusing actually.....

Since the "fines" aren't part of AARTO... so SANRAL will have no legal standing to attempt to block someones license on a vehicle.

Also, they've threatened that we won't be able to relicense vehicles if we have outstanding traffic fines for the last few years and that hasn't stopped me relicensing.

I have not driven on the tolled road in a year. Why should I register if I will not use it?

There are other roads that will take slightly longer to travel but it's possible to bypass the tolls.
 
So a lawyer on the radio is saying its illegal to withhold license discs unless there is a warrant for your arrest. They shouldn't even withhold it if you have outstanding fines he says.

I know if you use the private companies to renew your license for you, they automatically include outstanding fines in your fee...

Great, so wont be forced into buying a e-tag yet, going to renew/register my new vehicle license today and was so concerned when i heard this on the news last night. Does seem like quite a desperate move imo
 
What if i dont use the highways with my scooter? I dont know many people that use a scooter on the highway, now i gotta pay for this crap tag and i will NEVER use the highway because my scooter is just not fast enough and id feel way to scared on the highway with the scooter..

And due to the bad design of this sytem, if i get off at Samrand I would pay R21 a day and if I get off at Olifantsfontein I would pay R26 a day, and there is like a 2km difference between the 2 offramps.

Exactly my thought. They implemented that rule many years ago, and I know that I had at least 4k worth of fines hanging around. These are all empty threats, I am loving the desperation from Sanral and cANCer right now.
 
From the JPSA website
The Department of Transport should be acutely aware of the fact that regulation 59 of the National Road traffic regulations only allows for withholding licence discs if the person concerned has outstanding licensing fees or licensing penalties or, in the case of traffic fines, if they have failed to appear in court on a summons for a traffic offence and a warrant of arrest has been issued against them. The only exception to this rule is that under AARTO, a licence disk may be withheld if an Enforcement Order has been issued against the party concerned.

Just because licensing authorities have been abusing the National Road Traffic Regulations with impunity for ages now does not make it legal for them to do so and effectively force motorists to further break the law by not displaying a licence disc, despite paying the licensing fees and/or violate their constitutional right to freedom of movement.

You would need to prove you live in the province when you register for the numberplate , proof of adress. Besides i doubt it would make a difference which province the vehicle is registred to , when you go to renew the outstanding balance will show anyway and you would need to settle.
