Hi Guys, Trying to get a colleagues laptop to connect to a external display and just not having luck. I have tried to connect it to a external monitor as well as a projector and just nothing. Funnily enough if I select "extend the desktop onto this monitor" then the monitor's led stays on, if I un-tick this then it flashes but there is no display at all.

I have tried Fn + F8 which is supposed to switch it to external monitor, laptop screen goes blank but no display on the external.

Not sure what else to do. Another thing I have noticed is that when I check my display properties and go Advanced, there is no "Intel graphics media accelerator for mobile" tab like there is on mine, How do I install that?

By the way it is a Dell Latitude D510 running Vista business 32.

Thanks

You can find that on the Intel website.

Have you tries re-booting the machine while connected to the external display?

Yeah I have tried that, that is when I can Fn + F8 and it will switch between the monitors but nothing displays on the external.

I have downloaded drivers off intel site but doesnt help, still dont have that tab in display properties.

Ok well I managed to get the Intel drivers installed and now have the intel option in the display properties window, however still no joy. I extend the desktop to the external monitor and no display. I personally think the output on this laptop is cooked. The laptop runs seriously hot which makes me think something has possibly burnt out.

Have you tried a different monitor? On my Dell D510 and M70, it outputs automatically to the external monitor on boot, or via Fn + F8 if laptop is already powered on when the monitor is connected.

We had a few D505 and D510 models at our office that ran very hot (melted the plastic in some cases), and both the VGA and USB controllers were fried on some.

I haven't tried a different monitor, but have tried our projector and also doesn't work. The monitor works as I use it on my laptop.

When you say that it makes me more convinced that it is fried. So it is possible for the VGA to be fried and the laptop still work. I can't believe how hot this laptop gets, its unreal.

Yeah, some of the Dells were prone to overheating - the external VGA output is often knackered on laptops...
