I am getting ftp to work on my Afrihost (capped) connection but not my M-Web (Uncapped - Rerouted) package. I understand why the re-routed M-Web connections need to have P2P and the like blocked, but blocking ftp seems a little over the top - I need it for my work - and it is a fairly basic internet protocol. (I know someone else who is having the same probs with IMAP)

Anyone have any idea why this is happening? or when/if it will end?

Its driving me nuts having to disconnect and use Afrihost to use ftp - I paid for M-Web to handle all my work needs - now it seems I have to pay again to do it all on Afrihost or somewhere else.

They're doing their best, and one should be thankful for HTTP at least. Otherwise, all over protocols are pretty much blocked for the time being.

...or secure email

Email on secure ports is also down, so is Steam.

Guess we are second class citizens on Telkom's network.

My Steam was working yesterday on Mweb 384kbps uncapped. I even played a couple of CS1.6 games with my Steam being validated, etc.
I had to redial my PPPoE connection (and change login details from @dslmweb.co.za to @mweb.co.za) to get international Internet access again.

Lots of people on Twilight Gaming forum are complaining that they can't connect to the local PvPGN server either.

Here's a quote that I got (apparently from Mweb):
International ADSL outage affecting all regions
International ADSL services in the following area may be inaccessible due to a SEACOM outage: All Regions. Latest Update :- Please note that alternative routing is now in place and members are advised to restart their ADSL routers to effect the change. P2P traffic will be blocked while using alternative routing.

cant even ssh on mweb. i guess all ports except 80 and 443 have been blocked

People use ftp to get around torrent shaping. You wont get ftp unblocked.

So that's why I couldn't download Linux Mint. I tried from everywhere. But yes I see now that I can't download anything from ftp servers.

And now Afrihost (capped) connection has lost its ftp too - damn - this is getting worse not better. Looks like I am going to have to find some pure SAIX access somewhere. Where is the best place to get it quickly - Telkom Internet seems to have a "fill in a form and we'll get back to you" - croc. Web Africa?

OK - got sorted with OpenWeb - they have seen the gap and set up a package "for the Seacom Blues" - got to laugh.

Still - its the suckiest slow connection I have seen in years - seems like SAT3 is no longer big enough to carry all Seacom's traffic as well.

IMAP is down... this is ridiculous?? Is it legal???? Wtf even 8080 is blocked...

well, if you think its bad that IMAP & port 8080 (HTTP/Socks proxies) isn't working, try doing business with credit card machines not working :(

If IMAP is down, you can usually just use a Web E-mail client, like Gmail or so. If you're running a business on the consumer uncapped, then it would be worth while to switch to business uncapped! My office's international Internet has been working like 99% of the time, and we're on Mweb business uncapped.
