so i switched off my router before going away and when i got back and switched it on i saw there was an orange light on the router. i phoned telkom and after trying to reset the router , the lady said its a microsoft service pack error. i am running windows XP SP3. the laptop i am using has SP2 and all seems ok.

how do i fix the desktop pc and my wifes laptop to get us up and running again?

thanks.

A lady at Telkom said it was a Microsoft Service Pack area?!?

wayne... WTF!

"a lady" & "at Telkom"

She doesn't know WTF shes talking about.

Maybe try 'repair' the connection on the problamatic PC.

If you are using the Telkom Mega 105 router the problem lies with DNS. For some reason Windows XP with SP3 does not get auto DNS settings from the DHCP server on the router. Manually enter them on the XP SP3 machines to fix the problem. Do a "Start -> Run -> cmd" and then "ipconfig /all" on the SP2 machine to get the correct DNS server addresses.

thats what she said and something about a patch to sort it out. i tried a repair but nothing.

I have seen the XP SP3 with Telkom Mega Router DNS problem five seperate times in the last month. Only way I got it working again was to manually enter the DNS settings.

Try with two of the following SAIX DNS servers:
wbs-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.34.190 Cape Town Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS
rrba-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.38.190 Rosebank Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS
rndf-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.42.190 Johannesburg Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS
tpr-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.45.190 Pretoria Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS
wblv-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.46.190 Cape Town Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS
tbnb-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.50.190 Pretoria Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS
ndn-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.53.190 Durban Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS
nngy-ip-dns-4.saix.net 196.43.54.190 Durban Distributed Recursive Caching only DNS

ah ha thats what she said (i have a Billion router), we did the ipconfig thing and the numbers are 196.xx and on this laptop its 192.xx if i remember correctly. if i get the numbers off here how do i enter them on the other 2?

Right click My Network places on desktop
Click properties
Right click Local Area Connection
Click properties
Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Click properties
Enter preferred and alternate DNS addresses.

BTW - The Telkom Mega 105 router is just a rebranded Billion model.

Franna, your settings worked perfectly and i got the second laptop up and running but when i went back to the first laptop the settings were gone and i could not connect again. i will now enter your settings and test them out. i will also look at those links you sent me.

thank you.

oh yes, these settings i am manually putting in the pc, do i do the same in my router or not?

No - only enter the manual settings on the PCs and not on the router.

On the first laptop simply re-enter the custom DNS settings to get it working again.

ok let me see and i will go do the same on my desktop. be back now. thanks

it seems i cannot connect on the desktop and now i get a windows system error warning saying there is an IP address conflict on the network.

It seems that you have entered a duplicate IP address. All your connected pc's need to have unique IP addresses. As most people allow the router to issue these addresses, it is not normally a problem. In your case, you need to make sure that only the DNS value is obtained manually and not the IP address.

Alternatively, you can disable the DHCP server on the router and set up your IP settings manually. Just make sure that you have an unique IP address for every device.

hell ooooohhhh mense/people, after i posted this message my PPP light went off leaving me with no internet whatsoever but the strangest thing was that my LAN light was green again.

well after a week of phone calls to Hellkom and NO help from them i cracked and phoned them again last night and one of the guys walked me through the setup thing on the modem after he refreshed my line and we are up and running again. i don't know whay no one could do this earlier or at least tell us what the problem was and all they say is that its a problem in our area. oh well.

thanks for the help guys
