No launch date for Apple or Google Pay

South African banks say they have seen significant increases in contactless and digital payments in recent months.

However, there is still little clarity on when popular smartphone-based digital wallets Apple Pay and Google Pay will be coming to South Africa.

Its quite funny ...... here in the US, I often am asked "Apple Pay?" ...... "It aint workin'".
/Use Samsung Pay ...... and get the confused look, like the look people make when Sydney Powell opens her beak.

Samsung Pay FTW

Capitec and some others has the barcode scan to pay thing now. This have more potential, than Apple pay and Google pay in South Africa, imo. As the most people in this country does not have access to Apple phones or NFC type phones.
Cameras, they do have. Also, small shops might also pick up on barcodes more easily, as only investment is a poster or board with your barcode on. No need to rent NFC/card reader.

Have the opposite here, ApplePay is bulletproof, works 100% of the time, but GooglePay (With the same underlying bank card) will throw the occasional wobble and decline the transaction. Double click on the Apple Watch and tap (same card) and it authorises, literally 5 seconds later.

I use Garmin Pay and FNB Pay on my devices, so don't need Apple or Google Pay at all.

It's interesting how the banks are waiting for Apple? Wouldn't it be in the bank's best interest to get Apple/Google pay as quickly as possible. Why wait for Apple to make it available?
It seems there's a bit of extra stuff going on in the background with Apple pay according to Apple. Maybe it's a little more work for them they don't feel like investing in since the % of customers with Apple devices does not justify the investment.

I don't think the bank really care, as FNB for instance has their own tap and pay payment system supported on most NFC devices.
