Pietermaritzburg - The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government does not have the money to fund the Commonwealth Games due to be held in Durban in 2022.

KwaZulu-Natal finance MEC Belinda Scott said on Wednesday, when delivering the provincial budget, that the provincial treasury had approached the national treasury for assistance.

“At this point I need to state that at this present moment this province is not in a position to fund the Commonwealth Games, which is a national event.” She said the provincial government needed to focus on serving communities.

I hesitate to ask.... but wtf did you bid for it them !

Budgeting horizon extends to the next Nandos lunch and not a second beyond...

To loud cheers, singing and dancing, Durban was announced as the host City for the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, 2 September 2015.

As soon as the announcement was made, Municipal Manager Sibusiso Sithole and the more than 2 000 people that had gathered at George Campbell School of Technology to watch the televised live broadcast from Auckland, New Zealand, broke out in song.

The Games, which will cost R6.5 billion are expected to delivery up to R20 billion in outputs to the economy, which translates to an estimated R11 billion Gross Domestic Product growth. The more than 200 000 local and international visitors are expected to contribute up to R12 billion in direct expenditure. Durban will contribute about R500 million for the seven-year period before the Games begin.

Should this not ideally be funded/sponsored by the UK/King Charles III?

Any multinational event is usually funded by the host. Money is then recovered from the tourism it's meant to attract. All those white elephant stadiums we built for the football world cup weren't paid for by Fifa...
