No more Chrysler & Dodge for SA

Changes to car companies' global strategies continue to alter the composition of the South African car market. Recently, the departures of the Citroën and Daihatsu brands were followed by a much bigger announcement – General Motors is leaving SA, which will see sales of Chevrolet models come to an end. More market shocks could be on the way, but the unavailability of Chrysler and Dodge products isn't one of them...

FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), which produces Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Alfa Romeo vehicles, is currently not planning to replace any of its right-hand drive Chrysler and Dodge products with new-generation vehicles. The consequence of this global decision for South Africa is that the Chrysler and Dodge brands can no longer be imported.

According to an FCA South Africa spokesperson, the ageing 300C sedan can still be imported on demand, but at this stage it doesn't look like a right-hand drive replacement is on the cards. A handful of Dodge Journeys remain in the dealer network, but once those are sold, no more will be imported. It is important to note, however, that this is not a "withdrawal" from the market, but simply the result of a change in the multinational's global product strategy. Local dealers will continue to provide after-sales services to all FCA brand customers.

Focus on Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep

The effective discontinuation of Chrysler and Dodge on the domestic market will allow the local subsidiary of FCA to focus on strengthening the Alfa Romeo brand, expand the market footprint of Fiat products and launch new-generation Jeep products in the near future. Recently the company introduced the highly acclaimed Alfa Romeo Giulia in South Africa and, later in the year, will be adding the Milanese marque's first SUV, the Stelvio – read more about that model here.

On the Fiat side, the Fullback bakkie range will grow to include more derivatives and the Tipo compact hatchback and sedan range has just been launched. An all-new Jeep Compass crossover is also on the cards for South Africa in the not-too-distant future.

Changing marketplace

The South African market is relatively oversubscribed for its size, so some form of consolidation has been on the cards for some time. But, perhaps surprisingly, brands are not only leaving, but also investing. Isuzu has announced that it will be taking over much of General Motors' local operation, while Volkswagen is reportedly considering launching Czech brand Skoda, Chinese giant BAIC is building a factory to sell its cars and SUVs and GWM will introduce its upmarket SUV brand, Haval, later this month. We wait to see what happens with Opel – expect an announcement on June 8 2017.

Another small brand that appears to have disappeared off the local market quietly is Korea's SsangYong. Here, too, the unavailability of the brand's products is simply the result of economics. At the current exchange rate it is not possible to import and market SsangYong's attractive new products, including the smash-hit Tivoli crossover, locally. Should the exchange rate improve, however, we're told that SsangYong could very well make a return one day.

Journey review from last year:

Dodge Journey 3.6L Crossroad (2016) Review

The only Dodge product to remain on sale in South Africa continues to cater to lifestyle buyers looking for maximum space, comfort and features. But… after so many years on the market, can the Journey still compete?

We like: Passenger comfort, standard features
We don’t like: Thirsty engine, marginal cabin finishes
Also consider: Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe

What’s the appeal?

Though the Dodge product offering has steadily contracted in recent years, and there doesn’t appear to be any new product on the horizon, the Journey has carved itself a small (but sizeable enough) niche in South Africa. In terms of price, it occupies a position somewhere between the top-end smaller crossovers with seven-seat configurations (such as the Nissan X-Trail and Mitsubishi Outlander), and similar-sized (but lower-specification) vehicles such as the Kia Sorento and even the body-on-frame SUVs (Toyota Fortuner/Chevrolet Trailblazer/Ford Everest).

What the Journey offers, then, is a practical, spacious package loaded with a standard features list that is unmatched at the price. You also get some old-school charm in the thirsty V6 engine under the bonnet, and the boxy, very American looks.

Latest updates

The boxy lines of the Journey have aged well. Striking 19-inch wheels and roof rails are standard.

Officially, there’s not much that’s different in the latest Journey models. The Crossroad derivative is the flagship of the range, but according to last year’s sales statistics supplied to us by Lightstone Auto, the slightly cheaper and mechanically identical R/T continues to be the best seller.

The Crossroad can be differentiated from its R/T sibling by its brushed aluminium-look “nudge bar” and side garnishes, striking gunmetal 19-inch alloy wheels and a black grille. Overall, the vehicle has aged remarkably well... Constant updates have provided fillips during a surprisingly long model life.

Inside, the biggest upgrade is the uConnect multi-media system, which allows multiple connectivity options and also offers a hard-disc drive for storage.

How does it fare in…

Comfort and features?

The extensive standard features list is integral to the Journey’s consumer appeal. From an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, to leather upholstery, a heating function for the front seats, cruise control, navigation and the aforementioned uConnect multimedia system, the Journey offers many conveniences.

But the comfort on offer doesn’t only stem from the provision of these luxury items. At 4 888 mm in length, the Journey is slightly longer, narrower and taller than the Korean twins (Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe). So there’s a spacious cabin to start with. Now add a longer wheelbase and you have a vehicle that affords the first two rows of passengers very comfortable accommodation. The third row is, predictably, best suited for children.

Like most vehicles developed with the American market in mind, the seats are large, softly padded and supremely cosy on longer trips. In one of its previous updates, the Journey also received a larger, padded centre armrest. There’s also an overhead “conversation mirror” that allows you to monitor what the little ‘uns are getting up to on the back seat. And, very cleverly, those middle-row seats boast built-in booster cushions… a very welcome feature.

The Journey's ride quality is paramount to overall comfort levels too. Despite its 19-inch wheels and low-profile tyres, the Journey delivers a cossetting, pliant ride that deals with most road surfaces well. It’s less adept at cornering at any kind of pace, however, but this is unlikely to concern its target audience.

Performance

In a market that has largely shifted towards more frugal turbodiesel offerings, the Journey's thirsty 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine represents an odd choice. While the significant grunt (206 kW) is certainly noticeable, the Journey lacks the torque of its turbodiesel rivals. In fact, its 353 Nm of twist is developed quite high up the rev range (4 400 rpm), so you have to push the engine hard to extract the overtaking acceleration you may require and that hurts the fuel economy...

Fuel economy

Dodge claims an average fuel consumption of 10.4 L/100 km, but you’ll have to drive very gently to achieve that. In fact, our average during the test term worked out to closer to 12.5 L/100 km, which is very thirsty. At least the tank is large (77.6 litres, so refuelling stops aren't as frequent as you may expect.

Practicality

Dodge, of course, is a stablemate to Chrysler, a brand that's renowned for family-friendly packaging – the latter makes the Voyager, after all. So the Journey cabin is littered with some clever touches, such as hidden storage compartments. For example, the cushion of the front passenger seat lifts up to reveal a spacious storage box. Even the fact that the rear doors open to 90-degrees show that a lot of thought went into the family-oriented packaging of the Journey.

In terms of boot space… well, if all three rows are occupied, the space for luggage is restricted to only 167 litres, but this is par for the course for most seven-seater vehicles. In the more likely scenario of five seats taken and the third row stowed away, there’s more than ample space for a holiday trip. And with the second row also folded forward, the Journey is transformed into a very capable furniture removal “van” with no less than 2 296 litres of utility space.

Verdict

It’s easy to dismiss the Dodge Journey as a largely irrelevant throwback to yesteryear courtesy of its thirsty, old-fashioned V6 powertrain and cabin finishes that fall some way short of what you’d expect to find in a vehicle such as the Hyundai Santa Fe, for example. Strangely, however, the Journey turns out to be a charming vehicle that slowly wins you over with its numerous other talents. If large fuel bills don’t frighten you, there’s enough on offer here to merit a test drive.

Pricing

The Dodge Journey 3.6L Crossroad sells for R533 990. The price includes a three-years/100 000 km warranty and three-years/100 000 km maintenance plan. It requires servicing every 15 000 km.

Sorry to see them.go.

Loved my Chrysler Voyager. Nicest touring car I've had. Sold last month after years of great service.

It's now a hearse in the township. Along with the Venter Moonbuggy trailer I let go for a snip. Apparently the coffin goes in the trailer and the family in the Voyager, for long-distance trips to the homeland funeral.

The 300c was great, a pleasure to drive and had all the bells and whistles I wanted.
Mine was not std as I did everything to bring the consumption down but all it did was make it faster and faster.
Consumption was 4.2 km/h per litre which was a killer.
Top speed eventually after doing everything 278
Handling was excellent in a straight line
Reason for selling was the end of maintenance plan, fuel consumption and it became a cadre car.
Great car though.

Did you have problems parking it?

Model and sale price?

Did you have problems parking it?
Always it's big and I always used to park away from other cars. Did turn quite sharp though.
In the begging it scared me during parking in tight places because you touch the accelerator and it moves and quickly but I soon got over that.

The size was the only thing that prevented me from getting one. And a good thing since I moved to cape town.

If it was to get one, I would have put spinners on it with neon lights underneath

It's not that bad, the fact that there will still be aftersales support as good a reason to still picked one up. from the above quote we need to keep in mind that the brand is not leaving but rather just stopped importing the cars.

Yes that's correct. No "pulling out". Just clearly a focus on LHD cars which we don't get in SA.

Exact same reason why no models currently offered in the UK market.

FIAT CHRYSLER GROUP TO BE BOUGHT BY CHINESE BRAND?

A fresh report out of the United States suggests that a “well-known” Chinese automaker earlier this month made an offer to buy Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

That offer, reports Automotive News, was rejected on account of not being high enough. But more are apparently expected.

The report also cites various sources as saying major Chinese automakers – including Geely Holding, Great Wall Motors, Dongfeng and the Guangzhou Automobile Group – have been “conducting their own due diligence” on a potential purchase of the American company.

Automotive News suggests that any possible sale would involve the Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat brands, with Maserati and Alfa Romeo excluded from the transaction. The publication speculates that the latter two brands would be spun off in a manner similar to Ferrari.

FCA, of course, has been openly seeking a buyer for the past couple of years, after proposals to tie up with both General Motors and Volkswagen fell through.

More car brands to leave SA: Chrysler, Dodge 'no longer available locally'

Earlier in 2016, Wheels24 reported that Citroen would no longer be selling vehicles locally. In May 2017, Chevrolet announced its exit from SA.

In October, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has announced that two of its brand staples, Chrylser and Dodge, will no longer be available locally.

The reason? The automaker's US facilities won't build those vehicles in right-hand drive...

A 'fond farewell'

According to the automaker: "FCA will say a fond farewell to two of the mainstay car brands, with the Chrysler and Dodge vehicle ranges no longer being available locally.

"This unfortunate situation has arisen from our principals in the USA no longer building Chrysler or Dodge vehicles in Right Hand Drive configuration."

What about local customers?

FCA said: "We will, however, continue to support and service the existing Chrysler and Dodge vehicles through our franchise dealers."

FCA said: "The National Sales Companies of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), the World's 5th largest automobile manufacturer, have been operating locally as separate financial entities for the past five years, albeit under one management team, and are due to take the next step towards full integration under the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles South Africa (FCASA) banner from early in 2018."

Stelvio, Cherokee Trackhawk for SA

Later in 2017, Alfa Romeo will launch its Stelvio SUV, the first SUV from the Italian automaker.
The new Jeep Compass is due to arrive in SA during the first quarter of 2018 and the Jeep Wrangler replacement will also make its first appearance later in the year.

The Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, powered by a supercharged V8 engine, will make its local debut.

FCA said: "Numerous new model additions will also be added to the various Italian brands to keep the lineups fresh."

Expanding dealer network

In addition to the product lineups, FCA says it will expand its dealer network with "new dealerships being planned for Sandton, Fourways, Menlyn and Durban following the consolidation of our dealer network in 2017. FCA will have 42 Service and Parts to ensure a greater reach to our aftersales customers."

CHRYSLER, DODGE OFFICIALLY EXIT SA; FCA CONSOLIDATES

Back in August 2016, CARmag.co.za reported that Chrysler and Dodge would no longer be bringing new products into South Africa. And now, with local stock having finally run dry, the two brands have officially exited South Africa.

The reason? Well, the brands said that their “principals” in the United States were “no longer building Chrysler or Dodge vehicles in right-hand-drive configuration”, but added that they would continue to “support and service the existing Chrysler and Dodge vehicles through our franchise dealers”.

Chrysler and Dodge had, of course, fallen under the Chrysler South Africa and Fiat Group Automobiles South Africa banners (functioning as separate financial entities), but the latest news sees the two firms come together locally. The result is that early in 2018 the remaining brands – Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Fiat Professional, Mopar and Jeep – will be run by a new entity called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles South Africa.

CEO Robin van Rensburg said that his “role so far at FCA has been very interesting and challenging”, but added that he was “looking forward to taking FCA South Africa to new heights”.

The local launch of the new Stelvio is on the horizon, with the new Jeep Compass set to arrive early in 2018. A replacement for the Jeep Wrangler is scheduled to make its first appearance later in 2018, while the monstrous Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is also on the cards. In addition, FCA says it will be “expanding its dealer network”, with new dealerships planned for Sandton, Fourways, Menlyn and Durban.

“The future for FCA in South Africa is certainly an interesting one; my management team, indeed my entire staff complement, have their work cut out for them and I am confident that we will succeed,” said Van Rensburg.

“FCA’s brands have succeeded in the past, and will once again become a force to be reckoned with in the local market and we look forward to travelling this road with our customers, dealers and partners,” he added.

No more Dodge and Chrysler for SA

Fiat Chrysler SA has announced that it will no longer sell Dodge and Chrysler vehicles in South Africa, but it’s not a complete blow for fans of American brands as Jeep is here to stay.

The reason for dropping Chrysler and Dodge is that the US parent company has decided it’s no longer worthwhile to continue producing the two brands’ vehicles in right-hand drive configuration.

Chrysler and Dodge have already scaled down their presence in South Africa, and in recent years Dodge has only sold the Journey locally while Chrysler’s range consisted only of the 300C and Voyager.

FCA has said it will continue to support and service current Chrysler and Dodge vehicles through its franchise dealers.

The local division is also set to bolster its Jeep range with the introduction of the all-new Compass in the first quarter of 2018, and the next-generation Wrangler later in the year.

Also on the cards for South Africa is the 527kW V8-powered Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

The local division will continue to expand its Italian offerings too. The Fiat range has recently seen the introduction of the Tipo and Panda, while the Alfa Romeo’s Giulia is set to be joined by the Stelvio SUV towards the end of this year.

Furthermore, FCA has promised to expand its local dealer footprint, with new dealerships planned for Durban, Menlyn, Fourways and Sandton.

FCA South Africa CEO Robin van Rensburg said: “The future for FCA in South Africa is certainly an interesting one, my management team, indeed my entire staff complement, have their work cut-out for them and I am confident that we will succeed.

“FCA’s brands have succeeded in the past, and, will once again, become a force to be reckoned with in the local market.”
