No more fun and games

Women gamers are receiving harsh threats online for "poking deftly into the subculture's most sensitive nerve", writes Alistair Fairweather

This Gamergate thing still going? Can't people just shut up and enjoy life without bring race, sex and every other inequality into everything?

"Why aren't more protagonists gay?"
"Why are female characters portrayed in sexually provocative clothing?"
"Why did he shoot a non-white kid?"
"Gender-free December!"
"Let's boycott a grocery store for selling olive oil!"

For **** sakes it's getting monotonous. The media should just ignore "stories" like this.

"Women gamers", as in extreme feminists that are trying to destroy a fun past time. What about tomb raider? Fully fleshed out persona, they are only looking at certain games and not all of them.

If you don't like the games, don't buy them and they won't be made, criticizing them in public just draws attention to it and gives the developers more money as their fame increases.

Another article written from research done off buzzfeed. Sarkeesian was never an issue for gamer gate she is not a journalist she is not a developer, what she says might well be correct and it is in some cases, but its a free market and that is what the people want sometimes. Jack Thompson got the same level of a use but that was before twitter and rampant social media so it was less noticeable, it might be hard to believe but had anita been Alan sarkeesian the backlash would have been the same.

As for gamergate itself I don't think they really know what they want anymore, it certainly has got nothing to do in essence with women in gaming, sure there are extremist but all groups have them, you can't brand them a hate group based on the actions of others just because their values might overlap slightly with the extremists.

Most gamers myself included just want the escapism that gaming offers we do not care about social justice when we are gaming we care about fun and entertainment. I personally have never formed my opinion on a game based on what a game reviewer even the most well respected ones thought of it, unethical journalism will only in the long run affect the journalist.

None of this will affect gaming, what will is the lack of passion being displayed by AAA developers these days the corporate brands that games must be instead of the experience.

And the power is back on so I can stop ranting. Cheers

Death threats and threats of rape and violence must be investigated by law enforcement. Those women and men who have been threatened must go to the FBI/their local PD and file charges. Then these bodies must investigate and the DA should prosecute if evidence of such is found and the perp traced. End of story. Of course filing false charges should be prosecutable too.

Also I love how M&G gets to decide what nerds should feel when they're called nerds. You know it's now ALMOST affectionate. So slurs are not a big deal anymore.

Branding them a hate group is just an ad hominem meant to shut up the opposition. It's an equivalent of the race card. If there are hateful elements let the relevant law enforcement body investigate and prosecute the relevant individuals.

Sarkeesian and other do-gooders, such as her supporters at M&G should fund game development. Make feminist games and let these who want to play games buy them and enjoy them. If they're good, they'll outsell the misogynistic stuff and such companies may switch to making these games instead.

There's a ton of games with female protagonists. Virtually every freaking JRPG has female protagonists. Some ONLY have female protagonists. There are even harem games with one girl getting to find her ideal guy. Want a game with a female physicist? Heck there's Steins;Gate.

People should have a choice. If there are not enough positive games for women, then these women need to make them or pay to have them made, or petition studios to make games for them. Get 100,000 signatures of women who will promise they'll buy a game with feminist virtues and send that to EA.

Social Justice Warriors:

We need to raise our expectations and stop waiting for the medium to mature. It’s 2014. The first generation of consoles was decades ago. The only reason for games to be immature is if its consumers and producers are allowing them to be that way.

5. We become far more mindful of the games we make and play. Sexism in games is pervasive and toxic. Racism in games is pervasive and toxic. Violence in games is pervasive and toxic. Despite the skepticism the games press shows at every opportunity, it *really* looks like violent games *do* make us more aggressive and less empathetic. If researchers are repeatedly suggesting this and then we complain that the vilest people in our communities are too aggressive and not empathetic enough, aren’t we partially to blame for our general eagerness to make and play games that have these overall effects on people? If you think you’re not affected, you’re sorely mistaken and you sound no less ridiculous than people who claim that advertising doesn’t work on them.

And that's originally from Gamasutra folks. These people want to control what you get to play.

They're not in it for tolerance, they're in it to decide for you what you can and cannot enjoy. They're not willing to produce their own games, they don't like what you're playing. Enjoy.

Jack Thompson is a ****ing moron and deliberately steered arguments about violence in games in a slant that focused attention on him, to promote his own agendas. He obfuscated real issues, deliberately mislead people about the contents of videogames and ignored studied research that contradicted his own opinions and viewpoints. He never cared about videogames themselves, he only latched on to the way others were already hating on them because it was a soft target for him that didn't move about. You could put him in front of a tablet with Flappy Bird and he would still find some way to take elements of the gameplay and its story to declare it violent or detrimental to modern culture.

That's forgetting the fact that Thompson is as homophobic as Goodluck Johnathan. I wouldn't give him the time of day.

Well, to be [-]a moron[/-] fair about this, Flappy Bird sounds almost like Fappy Bird, which sounds almost like Fapping Bird, which... yeah, you can see where this is going. :D

so, i am actually confused here now. gamergate is about the following?

1. women being objectified in games?
2. journalist attacking women gamers cause they feel objectified?
3. male gamers verbally attacking women cause they stand up and don't want women to be objectified in games anymore?
4. all above?

Yes all of the above. It began when Anita Sarkeesian released her Tropes in Video Games series on YouTube, and received an enormous backlash because as Hamster so adroitly pointed out she should just shut her stupid fem mouth and quit whining. It then spilled over to the mainstream press who don't really understand the nuances of videogame tropes, but are used to feminist criticism and know that all forms of art are subject to it and it needs to be defended as a basic principle of a free society.

Yes, and at the same time some jilted fellow revealed that one Zoe Quinn, described as "an independent game developer" had been screwing anything that moved to promote herself. Femtards say these claims were debunked, but there is no source for that as Zoe won't say anything in that regard. All hell broke loose in the confused higgledy-piggledy Twitter hashtag - doxxing, threats of rape and violence ( probably by 14yr-olds comfortably at home ), femtards getting knickers bunched up, retards and morons having their say on all fronts.

Actual gamers carried on playing games through all of this, I guess.
