Their is no need for a static IP address, visit the following site:
www.dyndns.org

I have about 6 customers running on a dynamic dns service and it works perfectly!!

I'm using easydns.com. They provide Dynamic DNS too, along with backup mail servers. My smoothie handles all this for me :)

Actually you mean the DYNAMIC IP address can be given a friendly DNS name.....and yes dyndns is gr8, I have used it since November 2002 for clients and to host my own game/ftp server from ADSL

pls assist in setiing up my dyndns.org ip to access my server

i use zoneedit.com(dns service) + za.net(domain)

Still doesn't solve the following problems:
1. Running a mail server off your dsl. Dynamic IP = autoblacklisted (can't even mail forward to smtp.saix as they limit the amount of messages you can send per hour/day)
2. Running systems that don't do name translation, ie polycom systems

Really wish someone would offer a static IP on a normal account. Having to fork out R1000+ just for the luxury is ridiculous

A static IP would make life much easier and R1000 for a static IP is just not worth it. (With my P4 dedicated server which costs under R500 a month oversea's I can buy an extra IP addresses for $4 per month or I can buy a whole bunch for next to nothing)

X-Dsl has reverse DNS on its ADSL accounts. You do not need DYNDNS or any client. If your username is [email protected] your dns is abc.xdns.co.za.
I am sure there are other ISP's that implement a similar system, ask around maybe your ISP already do it!
