That sound was metal on metal , some damadge has been done .

Drain oil and you will find metal filings I think. Maybe drain oil and replace with new oil soon. The least you can do.

Roundhouse with all due respect to the OP, we are talking about somebody here who dosen't know that a car has a dipstick.........telling him to drain the oil is like suggesting that he does a heart transplant with one arm tied behind his back.......

I think he should ask a mechanic to come and visit him ASAP, and NOT start the engine in the meantime!

Well check the oil. Make sure it's close to the maximum. If the engine is no longer making a knocking sound, then you should be ok I reckon.

If they are very very lucky...once the oil light comes on, and the buzzer goes off, it all depends on how long the engine ran without oil, and whether any damage was done in that time...then you have to ask yourself why a car should "suddenly" need at least 4 pints of oil if it was fine when checked a couple of weeks back.

If it's not leaking, then it is burning, and if it's burning, we have a sick engine...end of story...:(

He said he didn't check the oil when he bought the car. Could be he bought it from someone just as oblivious as himself? :p

The other option is like you say, either a leak or a screwed engine.

No we spoke on Skype last night. The car was checked out by a mechanic 3 weeks ago, and everything was fine then. You don't suddenly lose that much oil without a serious problem...

It also depends on the mileage he was doing. It is acceptable to lose one liter per 1000km when the engine is operating under any significant load.

In any event, he needs to check it out pronto.

This car has been pottering to work and back the last 3 weeks...in Cape Town...not exactly the sort of mileage to use that much oil...after addind 3 pints it was only at the bottom of the dipstick...too much for ANY car under ANY condition!

I agree with you 100%

Whover sold the car MUST have known that it was guzzling oil...I am just amazed at the mechanic who gave the car a clean bill of health 3 weeks ago...
