From what I read on here now I can only give my opinion based on it.

The sound you heard was from the head, either lifters or valves. Due to the lack of oil they never got enough. best to check if everything is in order now would be to have someone check you exhaust from a cold start. It should give a puff of smoke now if any damage was done. That would mean you need to have the valve time seals replaced. While that is being done, might just have the head revamped.

A bearing knock is a sound that is very distictive. When you hear a sound coming from the engine that sounds like it is a big problem (It will sound like a big thumping knock knock knock). That is a bearing knock. If it's a slight tapping sound more like a constant tick tick tick tick. It's Tappets and they might just be lose.

This car has been pottering to work and back the last 3 weeks...in Cape Town...not exactly the sort of mileage to use that much oil...after addind 3 pints it was only at the bottom of the dipstick...too much for ANY car under ANY condition!

Can only be one of 2 things actually 3 but I highly doubt it's the 3rd, because even my 5yo daughter can tell something is wrong with option 3

1. Valve time seals (Slight smoke upon start up) When the car is off the oil in the head accumilates around the top of the valves. When the car starts again the oil leaks through the busted seals into the cylinder and burns with the fuel causing a slight and short smoke cloud. (Depending on the amount of start ups it can work through oil pretty quickly)

2. Oil leak

3. Rings (But as mentioned above, if it has a rings problem you would have noticed from the start. You will have a constant flow of smoke from you exhaust when you drive.) There is no way of missing it.

Very plausible too.
