Hi All

So... I recently moved house and got a phone line installed. I now want to upgrade the line to 1Mbps ADSL and I'm told there are no ports available on the exchange! I live in Newlands, Pretoria (exchange: 012-348xxxx).

The lady on the other side of my 10210 call was very friendly and she placed my order anyway but she couldn't give me an ETA on the ADSL because of this "no ports" debacle. How long am I expected to wait now? Apparently there's an upgrade on the exchange but only at the end of August.

Now... I'll pretty much only be using the line for gaming and the odd small download. Should I sigh up for 3g (I was thinking about the 10gig 8ta option) or is this not viable for gaming?

Any help would be appreciated

So you're saying you already have an ADSL line but there are no ports to UPGRADE your line? ...thought you only need a port for a new line ...or I'm misunderstanding your problem.

On the 8ta side, not sure about gaming but the 10GB for R199 alone is worth it imo

No, I don't have an ADSL line, only a regular phone line. They don't have ports available to upgrade it to an ADSL line.

Then I misunderstood you. Eish... I think your ONLY choice is to then wait until Telkom is ready and I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you regardless of what they tell you via the 10210 hotline.

As I said - I find the 8ta 10GB deal more than enough for my needs for it but I don't game using it. Maybe check the 8ta section here on the forum - I'm sure there's folks that can give feedback on the gaming side.

Get a package deal from Afrihost or someone and let them sort Telkom out. They carry a much bigger stick. I suspect Telkom uses the "no ports" excuse if the technicians are having coffee and are not in the mood to make the connection.

I would wait, just keep on nagging them (that's what I did when my line had rotten attenuation) and eventually they will solve the problem, else check if your area falls under Amobia's coverage, I was about to get that done but I don't have a line of sight to their towers, luckily Telkom sorted their s**t out.

I've been waiting since April for ports to become available in Midrand. I find it unbelievable how Telkom aren't on top of this. Surely its not hard to predict that ports will run out, yet they turn down new business for months because of this.

They told me the ETA is July 29th, so I'm hoping to hear some goon news within the next couple of weeks, but I'm nit holding my breath.

Actually it's quite the opposite. I originally signed up for the all inclusive deal with Mweb but they phoned me and told me the order was cancelled. Also, as I applied the Mweb consultant informed me that Telkom give preference to their customers first.

They don't need to even care because technically the new business will just wait indefinitely until Telkom are ready and willing. Monopoly - it's a b*tch if you're not part of it.

Thanks Imoe, you're always a big help, even if you give me bad news ;)

Agreed. I'd take anything to compete with ADSL, sadly, nothing does.

Wireless Internet Service Provider

Instead of copper you get a wireless connection to their network and they provide you with internet access.

You can look at Kawuleza and Amobia for a start.

This is an increasing issue with Telkom, as they are signing up as many people as they can and current exchanges are running at capacity. Also, opting for 1Mbps, also means that you are on a service that has a lot of users, and will have even more when Telkom starts their proposed service upgrades. There are a limited number of physical cards on the exchange for each service speed. My advice would be find out if there are any ports available on 4Mb, and just opt for the higher product.

Disappointing that certain ISP's are telling their clients that they get first preference on ADSL ports. That is not true, as far as I know.

None of those 2 have coverage in my area. :(

I'll keep looking though

@ AfriMan: 4Mbps is too far out my budget. So that's not an option. But many thanks for the response.

Try going to the Wireless Access Provider's Website, (www.wapa.org.za) and click on the map on the right hand side in the colour of the SA flag, marked coverage. Type in your request, together with your address, and let our members contact you if they offer coverage in your area.
