No rain for Pretoria? :(

Live on a plot, water table is still nice and high, water supply is fine.

I shall continue to water my veggies and my ornamentals. my lawn suffers though due to a lack of pressure.

Install an automatic sprinkler system and let it water your garden at 2AM (when it's cooler and the water has time to soak in).
I doubt they'll drive around at that time of the night and by the time it's sunrise the water has soaked in and the evidence gone (other than having the best looking garden in town).
If you want to get extra clever wire in a light sensor so that if it detects the headlights from a vehicle it switches off. :)

Okay scrap that idea - it's illegal.

So instead of conserving water you advocate using more of it, what do we do when there is no water?

Actually I've started looking at rain water harvesting but the storage costs are prohibitive.
The going rate is around R1 per litre and I want to store at least 50 kilo litres so that's R50,000 just for water tanks.
The typical set up of a couple of 1000 litre tanks under down pipes from roofs is totally inadequate unless you're only watering a few pot plants.
 
Forgive my ignorance, but I want to get a small jojo tank for my garden. It is pretty small, mostly paving with beds and loads of pots :rolleyes:
So I harvest the water, but how do you water then without pressure? Do you collect the water in a bucket and splash it around or do you need a pump? I have micro-irrigation thingies in my garden.

If you need pressure you'll need a booster pump.
Example: http://www.urbanrainsystems.co.za/accessories/accessories.asp

I have an irrigation controller that has an extra output for a pump or solenoid valve so I just need to wire the pump to it via a 12V operated relay and it will switch the pump on and off automatically when the sprinkler zones are activated.
If you have no automated watering system you can run a booster pump manually.

Mucho complicado :confused:. My gardener will destroy it within a month, I betcha. Will check out pump options though.

I run misters but the only way they work is if I have at most 6 misters to a pipe with my current pressure.

So I just have a small section of garden I water, about 50% herbs and veggies, 50% ornamental stuff.

If you get a jojotank you can get some really fat piping and do something like furrow irrigation if you like.

No wonder we are in drought.
