No vet ~ Need To Euthanize my Dog!

Some of you know that I live in the arse end of the world, nearest vet is 270km away in Springbok.

Shadow The Ferocious is starting to suffer, he has for the past three months deteriorated in health, no control over his bowels, back legs collapsing and in pain. He cannot sleep comfortably and lays at the strangest of angles.

I always said, I would help him to depart from this earth the day that he stops being Shadow The Ferocious.

The sparkle in his eyes are gone, his ears deaf..... he can no longer run around and battles to walk....

As much as it hurts, that time has arrived...

Now, problem, I cannot take him across the border to the vet, I cannot wait for the State Vet to visit in two months time...

I cannot leave him to carry on suffering and was thinking how best to relieve him of this burden.

I know people in my town that will end it by taking him away and shooting him, but this just does not seem right on so many levels.

I thought about feeding him a pile of sleeping tablets and painkillers, but don't if it will kill him or cause him greater suffering....

I feel I am mentally strong for this and need to get it done.

I have a bloke in town that runs a dog compound and looks after stray dogs and the likes thereof, often having to put them out when no one claims them..... I donate quite a bit to his institution, do I call him in the morning and without the rest of my family knowing, have STF taken away to be shot?

Not easy, but something has to be done...

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Can you not get the local doctor to consider a morphine overdose?

I'd say being shot is the best option, but I know if I was in that position I'd want to be with the dog when it happened, and I'd struggle to be sitting with my dog when someone shoots it. Not sure that I could pull the trigger myself. There's a visceral quality to bullets and bodies that makes it emotionally difficult.

Not much advice to give, just...all the best.

Spoke to "Uncle" Jimmy now, he reckons due to our remote circumstances, a bullet is the more humane way to go. He has had to do it a few times back in the day.

We have a rogue policeman in our town, a bit of a nutter, on paid suspension for the past year, heartless chap, he might be my goto on Monday!

Don't take him away and don't have him shot ...... jesus what kind :mad:

Research on what you could give him to guarantee an overdose and peaceful death, at home, surrounded by everything he knows and loves
 
Your local "human" doctor should be the best option. I'm sure he can concoct something a bit more dignified.

Or phone the vet in springbok and have a courier pick up "the vial" to deliver to the your doctor who can administer the correct dosage. Do couriers operate in your region?

But then again brain synapses operate at 430km/h.

A 9mm pistol shooting a bullet is much faster than that. A quick google tells me that it can be 3-4 times faster than nerve impulses travel.

So a bullet should be able to destroy any brain activity before the brain can register any pain.

Phone the vet in Springbok and see what options he has.

Couldn't think of a worse option that taking him away to be shot, but probably the most humane way.

Must be a horrible decision to make. Sterke. :cry:

Shooting Off for the moment! The vet in Springbok will not give out the vial to euthanize the dog. A lot of politics at play here. Many people in my town have been in a similar situation.

This being said, On Tuesday I will be driving through SPK, so will stop and chat to him. Failing this, I know of two other vets that I can pop in and see whilst down in the Cape. I am sure if I explain the situation and the cross border issues, one of them will be able to assist.

In the meantime, my domestic has been briefed on who to call should he fall from grace whilst we are away for the week.

Ironically, when I left work just now, the first person to drive past me was the rogue policeman, looks like a nazi!

On arriving home STF just stayed in his doghouse on his sponge, did not even lift his head....

Shall gauge later when I light the braai, usually this attracts both him and the JB cat!

But sometimes those border officials can be real *******s if you have an animal and especially a deceased animal on board.
 
So sorry. A lousy situation to be in. Very sad. Dogs are part of the family

To a dog, euthanasia or a bullet means the same thing. Unexpected Painless death. The only difference is outsourcing the responsibility to avoid personal trauma
. shooting it is more about your emotions and not about the dog.

If it's suffering, I would suggest shooting it.
Having said that, I am not sure I could do it myself. Different when it's your own situation.

It's not about the drive, it's about having a doggy passport to get over the border.... major issues with this border and dogs... I need to travel 500km to Keetmanshoop to get the passport.... just not an option right now...

Just came off the phone with my mate, who is the Game Warden here, he just came back from shooting an injured ostrich, even he refuses to shoot the dog on the grounds he knows STF too well.....

Lit the braai, the old guy dragged himself out to the fire,

A bullet is best. I know it sounds brutal but its about the dog isnt it? Dogs live in the now. The RIGHT NOW. The suffering is the now. A bullet is painless (for the dog) and solves the problem.

Living on farms its the way its done most times, even the companion dogs. Sorry for your dilemma....
 
Tell your family and phone the bloke in town now, if he can't help, I don't know, maybe a sleeping pill and a bullet.

Don't wait till tomorrow your doggy trusts you to end his suffering.

Yeah I reckon call the vet and ask for the best option available in your circumstances.
