No vet ~ Need To Euthanize my Dog!

A bullet will be the best and quickest, call the policeman to come fetch him. Don't over think it, don't give your family time to think about it, just do it. Telling your family to say goodbye because the policeman is coming to fetch him on Thursday for example will be the worse thing possible to do. Let the policeman come fetch him one day when not even you are home.

My oupa had to revert to the bullet a lot of times years ago on the farm, his own dogs, farm workers dogs and neighbours dogs. The vet was simply too far or a dog so badly injured in a fight or snake bite that he wanted to end it ASAP. He hated it, but was the only guy in the area willing to do it.

I have put a bullet to many much loved dogs and cats on the farm. I know it sounds heartless but let somebody do it, it is more cruel to let a being suffer because there is no vets available.
 
Sat with STF after my braai last night, sun was going down, in the back of my mind I wondering if this was my pal's last sunset....

I awoke this morning expecting to find him in his doghouse on his sponge, but he surprised me by lying out by the braai....

I gave him his brekkie consisting of cooked chicken livers.... sat watching him..... pondering...... no control over his bowels..... broken ears, battling to move, yet here he lays.....

I have to leave tomorrow morning for a week down south..... My domestic will be staying and I have made up my mind.

Later on this morning, I will go fetch the Dog Guy, get his opinion and hear how he puts down the countless dogs that he keeps donw at his pound.

Then I will make my driver available for my domestic, the dog lives in hope that I can find a vet down south that will give me the meds required to do the deed. If STF starts to fail whilst I am gone, my domestic who has known STF from his first day here will call my driver who will contact the Pound guy.........

Tough dog this STF , but then we do have to bear in mind he was born down on the Cape Flats back in the day and smuggled over the border into Namibia!

My mind is made up.
 
If you do go the shooting route, at least be with him in his final moments. Don't let a stranger come pick him and take him away on his own.
 
If you can get some quarterzone, will help the dog plenty.
even if just till the vet arrives...
 
Just make sure they don't miss if you're choosing the bullet route

and I'd rather be holding the doggie while it happened - not practical with the shooting method

Get insulin from the pharmacy and overdose him

Id never know what Id do in your situation, but Id know Id want to go out peacefully, not with a loud bang,
overdose on morphine, make him happy in his last moments on earth, at least he'll get to the doggie pearly gates with his tail wagging.

not sure if such a thing exist for dogs, like a hospice? where you live out the rest of your days happy until you die.

Of course you shoot him. The priority is ending the suffering fast not whatever appeals the most in terms of human sentiment about which method is best.

Been in a similar situation before & deeply regret not acting decisively immediately. That hesitation cost my pet an extra 12 hours of suffering. :(

let me ask this, would you yourself prefer to go out as as peacefully as possible?
or with a big bang?

Id rather give the dog a lot of morphine, and make them happy in their last hours on earth, not make them suffer with a bullet to the brain.

I donate quite a bit to his institution, do I call him in the morning and without the rest of my family knowing, have STF taken away to be shot?

Not easy, but something has to be done...

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Single bullet to the head.

Sounds worse than it is. It's instant if you do it with the right caliber and the dog will not suffer a bit.

If you can't do it, get someone to do it for you. I applaud you for making the difficult choice, but a pet suffering is the worse of the worse!

How is poisoning a loving pet better to having him shot with a single bullet that brings instant death?

I have had to shoot dogs I love more than humans. One was gauged by a bush pig. It's not easy, but knowing it's the most human way of letting him die, one does find a bit of comfort.

Yes of course morphine is preferable. It's a schedule 6 drug and is not easily available. Are you gonna let you pet suffer for extra hours/days while you try to source it?

So yes bullet immediately is preferable because it skips the prolonged suffering

You must have put animals to sleep, it is pretty darn instant. You do have to remember that the person doing the job has to live with it, having Fido's brains blown all over the table is not exactly the best way to remember him.

That being said, if there are no other options then I would say a bullet is better than nothing. At least the doggo doesn't know what is about to hit him.

so morphine is not easily available, and you in the arse end of nowhere?
well then id prefer to go out peacefully still, sure a doctor can inject something to put him to sleep peacefully with no pain,

a bullet just sounds so brutal, but maybe thats the difference living in a rural area will do to you.
vs a city life, where drugs are widely available.

From the dogs perspective a bullet is instant - practically it's a non-issue. It's just the human mental associations with guns that make it difficult. Dog doesn't care. The bigger problem is the dog sensing the owners distress beforehand :(
