No Vodacom or Cell C

@Franna: Don't believe IOL...the network went back online just after 4pm and I've made several calls which confirms this.

Vodacom off-line.

It has been reported that the Vodacom network is down throughout South Africa..

According to Vodacom the reason for the fault has not yet been established.

Vodacom have undertaken to report back one the fault has been found.

Vodacom today cut all Cell C's Interlinks to it's network, because Vodacom believe that is what was causing the congestion on there network. But Vodacom failed to inform Cell C that they were cutting the interlinks! to there network. That just shows Vodacom think they can just do as they please. It was not Cell C's interlinks that is causing these error's because I have friends on Vodacom who still can't call or be called.

Just think about something for 2 sec's 20 millions subscribers on 5700 base stations which are over 10 years old (not all but) what do you think the outcome will be?

Sure they can't call or be called, because it's from or to a cellc line.... interconnection link between cellc and Vodacom has been cut off!

I don't see any official response from cellc after Vodacom's press release, not even on their website. All I see on www.cellc.co.za is that the very first link that anyone browsing their site will see is "Mobile Number portability". I smell a rat.... and it stinks of sabotage!! Vodacom would never release that kind of statement unless they had proof. :( :( :(

Some lady from CellC gave a response..it was on 702.Well she basically just said "It's their fault, not ours...we're innocent'

@ic, don't think so (in this case). It was a signalling error coming across from the interconnect links.

@Cell C 3G, you seem to be not only misinformed about the makeup and age of the Vodacom network, but also about Cell C's, who uses Siemens kit and not Motorola as you suggested. So, although I appreciate your loyalty to Cell C (nothing wrong in that), it would be better to get your facts right otherwise the forum will hang you out to dry. (Trust me, I've been there...:) )

Obviously Vodacom is not just going to cut interconnect links for the fun of it, just think of the revenue lost. There's been constant (and ongoing) communication with Cell C on this issue.

V3g

Well On Cell C's system it states that the base stations are motorola (i work for them that is how i know) I will double check that and i am sorry if i am wrong!!!

well then v3g you won't mind me asking how old is vodacom? i am not say all there base stations are that old but i would imagine most are.

Cell C was never given notification from vodacom that they were going to cut the interlinks to cell c, when i found out i reported this to management they were shocked as Vodacom told cell c that they think they have found the problem and are sorting it out. If Cell C was the problem why then did vodacom not inform Cell C? Also not all vodacom's customers are able to use there phone at this very moment there are still people battling with vodacom, if it was Cell C and now Vodacom is not connected in anyway to cell c then why are there so many Vodacom customer's that still have a problem? My sister is on MTN and when she try's to call her boyfriend who is on vodacom she gets his voicemail, or a message "the number you have dial does not exist" we just tried it about 10 mins ago. and his phone is on he can't call out either. the error he gets is "network congestion" (oh and she phoned him on the landline that is how i know) And please don't tell me to switch the phone off then on or put the sim in another handset because he has tried everything the only number he can get through to is 111 and they say "there is a problem he must just wait"

Vodacom 3g is correct when saying that "Cell C uses SIEMENS".By the way you are acting childish by saying Vodacom base stations are old because base station can be changed over night if a network wants to.

@Cell C 3G - throwing a tantrum wont help. But I am seriosly wondering why bad data-packets can take down a mission critical system!
I have seen this before on other networks when some 'clever' tekkie connects a test platform to the live switch. (not saything this happened tho')

Years ago (long before VC) as a 'clever techie', I decided to do a change on a live network without proper procedure. Brought one of the large Oil Company's Head Office LAN down for about 20 minutes....

Was just a small change...should not affect anyone....no one will even notice....Yeah right, nearly lost my job. :o

RichardP, I don't think it was a case of 'bad packets', probably more incorrect info. A bit like adding a router to a network with the wrong routing tables and these get propagated. Eventually the whole network is confused, but technically still up and working.

Don't know if you noticed but during the downtime yesterday, you could still perform other services like sending SMS's.

um yeah i was not really affected at all by this major shutdown as GPRS and SMSs still worked and i dont make peak phonecalls. all i can think of to say is this is the first time i have ever heard of the entire vodacom network being down. and i believe it is a sign of things to come. vodacom, and infact all the networks need to get together and put plans in action to ensure this never happens again. telecommunications is vital for any country, and when over 20 million people are disconnected it is a very serious cause for concern. so i urge the networks to get together and invest in the future. spend as much as you have to. stop sponsoring the soccer and rugby and spend it on delivering the best service possible.
