"No white people allowed"

Big up to all those that protested. Wow.. I was blown away by the unity in an area I never expected unity. A little proud moment right there.

On the flipside, I know why they dont like white people on their ferrys. White people are #1 kidnap targets and there are lots of pirates in Nigeria (see Ross Kemps show for this).

Nigeria is a heavy country... and broken and violent. White people are very high targets to pirate, freedom fighters, gangs and drug cartels.

Once again.. Kudos to all involved who stood up for what is right.

Agreed wizard. I was also impressed by the unity the African countries showed.

Don't you maybe want to quote the first paragraph or so?

Lagos - During a visit to Nigeria, on former president Nelson Mandela's birthday on Saturday, parliamentarians from South Africa and other African countries refused to board a ferry, due to the company's policy that states white people were not allowed on board.

"Our 67 minutes became 3 hours of protesting a heinously racist policy," said Mtholephi Mthimkhulu, deputy speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, on Sunday.

Yes we can! :p:D

Was trying to figure out what "security reasons" there were for refusing white people. Your explanation makes sense.

Also concur, props to all who made a stand.

Thanks for posting this positive titbit, those diplomats did the whole region proud.

Parliamentarians from Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia, Gabon and Tanzania also protested, and eventually none of the parliamentarians went on the sight-seeing trip.

+1

Pity that Zooma doesn't have the same qualities.

“Nothing wrong” with excluding white journos – Zuma

Controversy over ANC president’s address to ‘blacks only’ FBJ function

JOHANNESBURG (Sapa) - White journalists expressed their dismay after they were denied access to the "hottest news ticket in town" when barred from listening to ANC president Jacob Zuma at a forum exclusively for black journalists.

Zuma addressed the Forum of Black Journalists' (FBJ) re-launch at the Sandton Sun hotel in Johannesburg on Friday.

The ANC president himself saw nothing wrong with white journalists being denied entry to the event, in which he delivered an off the record address.

"I saw nothing wrong," said ANC president Jacob Zuma when asked whether he approved of the exclusion of white journalists.

The FBJ? That sounds like a certain group/association of people. It would stand to reason you are exlcuded if you don't belong to the group itself. I don't think it was meant to be racial exclusion. But of course i can see how it would been seen as segregation due to the fact that it's a colour issue.

The question is, would he have approved if there was a Forum of White Journalists? You're right, there's no place for racial segregation.

"The Forum of Black Journalists is welcome to choose whoever it likes to attend its meetings. Black, white or blue. It’s a free country.

But no journalists, of whatever hue, should be in the business of organising off-the-record briefings with political leaders.

Wasn’t anything learnt from the infamous 2003 Bulelani Ngcuka briefing that caused enormous damage to the image of journalists as politically independent players beyond manipulation? And that was an occasion not even initiated by the media."

This is a very good response. Too long to post it all. So here's the link:

"Emotions became quite heated at one stage. We said we can’t support a racist policy on Mandela's birthday," he said.

Does that mean they can on other days? ;)

I agree with Serqet, it is very funny, if there were no white people or coloured people would there have been an issue? I wonder if it would have been noticed or just giggled about?

Who cares about Nigeria. Yet another African country where one general fights another one for control over a block or a city of shacks.

67 minutes a year you're allowed to be non racist :D

Rather cool that they protested, quite a pleasant surprise.
