It's precisely that sort of attitude that upsets me. It's the same as Europe/America saying "Who cares about Africa"

There is an article somewhere on m&g about all South Africans having an American/Europe attitude towards the rest of Africa.

But Nigeria is also part of the Next Eleven.

Because we shouldn't adopt an attitude of 'so what' when we are all African at the end of the day. Nigeria also has a healthy economy and vital resources such as oil. We should not be so quick to say "who cares". I don't understand the world when we are all so 'in it' for ourselves. It's disturbing to my idealistic beliefs.

They may have a healthy economy because of oil, but it's still a war-torn dump. People call African countries "beautiful" because there are trees growing where streets used to be when the evil colonialists left. Why do most of the African countries suffer from poverty, crime, squalor, war, etc etc?
 
Africa is largely untouched and that is something quite beautiful. While i understand that we have a lot of problems i don't see this as a reason to say 'F*** it!' I would hate other countries to think of South Africa that way. We have a lot of potential albeit untapped.

We have a lot of potential? Why do we need other countries to help us unlock that? Why can the rest of Africa not make progress on their own? If I was a western country I would not risk helping some poor war-torn African country for fear of being called an invader or a colonialist. :rolleyes:

Damned if you do, damned if you don't...
You fear being called a colonialist/invader so you don't help.
You get called a racist because you aren't helping Africans and then when you do you still get called a racist for having the gall to help out because Africans cannot progress without help from the west and your money is not good enough.

Serqet, wakey wakey. How on earth can you harbour any idealistic beliefs while living in this country? Corrupt politicians helping corrupt business people helping corrupt politicians helping corrupt union officials to prevent the necessary, coordinated protests. Robbery, murder, rape...are those things any different from people being very selfish?

And it's not just here. Everyone is selfish. Human nature.

I know all this but it doesn't let me give up on the human race all together. I still feel that we can get past this if we just made a concerted effort to be different. To think differently. Every now and again you hear a story of a person who defies the norm and that's inspiring. I still feel that Africa has a lot to offer the rest of the world and don't think we should adopt a careless attitude because we aren't Nigerian or Ethiopian etc.

But alas!!

The same as all people who are white are not colonialists etc :D

A quick experiment should sort it.
Gather your mates 20 or 30 of them walk down the street holding placards with White Empowerment scribbled on them... Will you be labled racist? Or will you be labled as a proud white?

Then come back to me about stereotypes ;)

Africa is a disaster. Look at the rest of the world. The Norse already had formidable armies with massive fleets of ships centuries ago, and when we whites made the mistake of coming to Africa a mere 357 years ago, what did we find? Nothing....

Africa just doesn't seem to be a country where the natives bother with development and progress. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, the bad thing was to try and 'Westernise' is. African culture and European don't go together.

But that's ridiculous because if 30 blacks walked down the street with Black Empowerment scribbled on placards it will still be seen as racist.

Okay now take 30 whites walking down the road with White Economic Empowerment on the placards and 30 blacks with Black Economic Empowerment placards which group is racist?

Bear in mind now you said blacks would also be seen as racists if they had the same cards as the whites.

And I can deduce from your previous reply that you would assume that white carrying White Empowerment placards are racist... Isn't that stereotyping?

My theory on this is weather & necessity...
Million of years ago people had to start building shelters in europe and budgeting food for winter and all the like while in africa(or a tropical island) you could live all year around without much more thought than fetch it eat it..


My theory is that harsh environments breed the early civiliations.. hence the face that europe(cold) and asia (desert) breed some of the earliest civilizations.
