Noise and line attenuation

Hi guys, a friend of mine is complaing about his line speed/stability...
could these be the problem? not sure how all these things work...

Must he drop his line to 512?

Nope, he's got a very good line.

Attenuation is similar to mine:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Link Rate 10015 Kbps 1023 Kbps
Line Attenuation 15.0 dB 10.5 dB
Noise Margin 18.3 dB 7.3 dB

Noise margin drops as you increase speed on the line hence why mine is lower.

There's something else wrong.

Does he have a telephone connected to the line?

If yes, does he have a filter connected?

grim, what does this filter look like? is it the thing that fits into the wall with 2 x connections 1 for data and 1 for voice?

we have a similar problem and keep reporting it to telkom. i've now replaced 2 x telephones, 1 x router, 1 x filter and telkom are now saying i need a "pots" filter. the noise persists.

Yes that is the filter .
The more extensions (Telephone extensions) you have on your ADSL line the more problems you will have.
What does the noise sound like if it is buzzing that is just ADSL line noise if it is crackling that is an indication of a line fault.

thanks FN, it's crackling. 1 x router, 2 x phones we can't even have a normal phone conversation but when telkom come to the house they say we need a new....., then a new..... then a new...... personally i think the house needs rewiring. is there a way to get them to do that?
