Hi Guys,

I bought a UPS over the weekend. Unknown to me, this thing has a fan that is very noisy when it is charging or discharging. Yes, I understand that that is probably how it's supposed to work, but it's the first UPS that I have owned that makes such a huge racket.

Anyways, I emailed the store where I bought it and asked if I could exchange it, and if not, get a refund. So the dude tells me no, he cannot help me. It has to be faulty for him to take it back.

So, whats my move? I really don't care for this thing whirring for 5 hours while charging after a power outage.

I've several >1KVA units with fans, mainly Mecer, installed at clients and they're not noticeably noisy. What make is yours?

CPA is your move.

They have to take it back as it doesn't meet your expectation of quality.

Why not try and replace the fan with a silent one as bought after-market for computers ?

Because that would void the warranty.

It is a shame that some companies flout the CPA. Next time you will just buy from takealot who offer hassle-free returns. The shame is that it makes the industry less competitive.

Thats not a problem. I live about 2kms from their walk in store. The thing is, the main mackie van die plekkie there is notoriously difficult to work with.

The issue here is that noise is very subjective, it may be difficult to get a refund under the CPA if all units have the same "problem" as it could be categorized as buyers remorse .

Meh, I don't have the energy for this dude, or this problem. I will make a plan to trade it on Carbonite or something.

The noise level is in the specifications though. Maybe he could measure it with an app?

... and sure enough there's an app for that :)

I found Sound Meter Lite for android, not sure how accurate it is but it measures the average ambient level in my office with 4 computers & UPS's at <40dB (has a graph over time feature).

I have one and the fan noise is annoying. The Eaton 5e models are simple basic UPS units. There aren't many configuration settings.

My modem/router and a desktop computer in my home office run off the 1100i. I just cope with the fan noise. Fortunately the fan doesn't run constantly. Only during charging / discharging cycles.

During power outages, I run the output of a small generator through the Eaton 5e, using it as an AVR.
