Anyone installed this yet?

Type *123*14# and press dial on your MTN phone. It's a very nice chat program that works on the same basis as Mxit. Only difference is that this only works on the MTN network (I think).

I'm having problems connection most of the times. Hope this is only teething problems because first impressions last.:rolleyes:
 
Yeah my first impression was bad. I hate spam and the MMS they sent me irritated the crap out of me. I don't want to have to Optout of 7 million services a day.

yeah I got the mms but am running Mxit already. unless noknok can offer something unique I don't want it thanks...
 
The last time I check this is not an application that u can install on your phone (e.g. Mxit/Gmail App, etc) it only works on the net (phone browser) which in my view is a deal breaker! ALAS!!!! C'mon MTN 'we' do want to use locally developed services/applications but the quality and user friendly-ness must be up to scratch especially given a company like MTN.

Wasn't VODA also developing a similar application/services?

Damn I got one on each cell I own. One would not open and I deleted both for sake of safety. I even goggled but saw it is something to do with MTN but I could not find real Info. Was also scared it is a virus. So much for Information, BAD MTN!
 
Completely pointless. Who do they think will use a service that only really works on MTN, when an alternative (Mxit) works on all networks and all phones. I tried to download it, but it only seems to work on a few Nokias and one Sony Ericsson, the WAP site doesn't seem to work very well (actually not at all on Opera Mobile on my P990) and reading the description I don't care if it ever does. It seems both Vodacom and MTN have managed to spend lots of money creating something no one actually needs that replicates something everyone already has.

exactly. the only reason i can think of is that they want more people to join their network.
 
I have installed the Pc ver. and logged in successfully...have'nt used it though. I think MTN will eventually create a way to make their IM service 'cheaper' than MXit or similar by charging higher prices for data. I'll bet they'll devise a similar scheme if Voip gets too popular for comfort - MTN has already got that R25/MB clause in their T&C...be afraid...be very afraid
 
I was kind of hopeful that this will be a proper IMPS implementation so that it can be used in native IMPS applications that is included in a lot of recent phones: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMPS

It does seem interesting though, of course it will depend on how it gets billed in the end...

I tested the web interface a bit. You have to go through the MTN proxy and use your phone's internet connection, they don't allow external access. That is probably why it doesn't work on Opera on the mobile, since they use their own proxy. It works fine on my phone's native browser though. It also worked on my PC using a standard browser (Firefox) but I had to connect through my phone and use the MTN proxy.
I could send messages as SMSs to MTN and Vodacom users after adding them as friends. I assume its at standard rates. So at least that is an interesting 'feature' ;)

It is an IMPS based platform. Native IMPS clients are disallowed because they are IMPS CSP 1.1 compliant and will not support CSP 1.2 features such as Pictures and Chatrooms.

Also, some handset manufacturers are "somewhat" compliant to the standard, making it difficult to manage.

Lastly, advice of charge messages, (e.g. for sending an MMS from the client) will not be shown on native imps clients.

noknok can communicate with Meep and vice versa, however there have been bugs on certain clients which only allow numbers to be added in international format i.e. 2782...

SMS are currently free, not MMS though.

And the pc client http://www.noknok.co.za/downloads/MTN_IMPS_PC.exe works better than the browser one, assuming you get by the hurdle of having .net framework installed (most xp sp2 machines do).

Point is, it doesn't offer much new. There are countless xmpp apps and mxit available. The only new feature is the ability to send messages as sms's to people without jabber or mxit. But since we don't know how much this is going to cost in the future - I at least am hesitant to use it. Only reason I would be interested is if it can be used by my phone's native IMPS app - since it is IMPS based I don't think it is that hard to implement.

In my opinion, it is just as useful as neotel's free minutes ;)

UI cleaned up a bit (can do more).
Allows non MTN users(duh).
Allows Gtalk users.
