NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

My branded Vodacom 5800 wouldn't update past v41, which is buggy and horrendous to use since it caused a screen glitch on my phone sometimes when coming out of standby. I never tried updating my branded 5800 via the PC software, but went straight to changing my product code to the generic EURO version for my phone. Best thing I ever did. Got v51 via the PC software updater and v52 OTA.

The improvements are noticeable, especially in the web browser. The only reason I changed the product code now is that my phone is almost 2 years old and nearing the end of the warranty period.
 
Hi all

Finally coming to terms with my 5800 (4 months before my upgrade is due in 3 months :whistle: ).

Using NSU (never worked OTA), I updated to v40.0.005 (that's all it found) from 10.somthing, what I got with the phone. Night and day really, had major problems with screen flicker, changing colours and simply shutting down randomly, all gone :D
Unfortunately so has timed profiles, but I guess you can't have everything...

So deciding to learn about and do things on it before upgrading - Trying to convert .avi files to .mpeg4 files, but the converters I've tried bombs out at around 255mb out of the 840mb file (tried 2 avi movies).

Funnily, when I drag the .avi file to the phone in PC Suite, it also seems to only convert around 1/4 of the file. This file actually plays that bit though.

Is there any free avi to mpeg converter that is reliable? The one I found is called 'Convert AVI to MP4', website convertavitomp5.com.

Any suggestions why this is happening, or a better converter? This one has zero settings I can play with under properties...

(incidentally the free navigation might actually draw me back to Nokia instead of the Desire HD I was looking for which is overkill for me anyway)
 
My phone has these strange white and black moving lines across the centre of the screen.
Any ideas what could be wrong? Software/Hardware?

I had a flickering screen problem. Was whole screen though, and as far as I could tell, only when unlocking the thing. Took it to MTN who sent it off for repairs. Got it back in a week with a new screen.

Was a little amazed actually.

Yours still in warranty? I think my issues is a known one, might explain speed of replacement.

+1 something to do with the conection between the touch screen and the phone, take it to your SP or Nokia if its still under waranty, they will repair it in like 2 or 3 days

I have been due for an upgrade for 2 months but I can't find anything that can do everything better than my Nokia 5800.

I love that the phone is not too expensive so that I can take it everywhere without worrying about it being stolen, it can take a hard knock, GPS (garmin) that just works, etc.

N8? C6-00? Or wait for the C7/E7 to be released in SA...
 
I went for the N8 and it is brilliant. But if you can wait and you have a tight budget then the C6-01 is worth waiting for. The C6-00 is a bit of the same since it runs Symbian^1 (9.4)

I have the x6 and its almost the same as the 5800 but the touch screen is much better
 
Is Symbian not dying a slow death? I know it's currently still one of the big mobile OS's but as far as I know Nokia will be switching over to MeeGo and let Symbian ride into the sunset. Is it a smart idea to invest in a Symbian phone now which you'll be stuck with for two years?

I love my 5800 but I don't think I'll be buying another Symbian phone if updates/apps slowly start drying up for it.
 
If you look at the new breed of Symbian^3 devices like the N8 and C7 then Symbian is all but dead. It is still growing at a very fast rate.
 
They also have Series40 and that is showing no signs of slowing down. What you need to keep in mind is that Nokia is not a one pony horse race - they have many different product lines aimed at different market segments. It is very easy for them to have lots of OSes in their line up.
 
I have used Nokia devices for 15 years and watched as they went from a phone maker to the maker of not only phones but also operating systems. If you look at the differences between Series40 and Series60 (and defuct Series30 and Series80) you start to see how they could quite easily manage these different product lines while maintaining uniformity about their interfaces and typical device behavior. Maemo has been also been around for a while now and it behaves very much like you would expect a Nokia device to behave.

From a end user perspective you really don't have to worry, underneath they may have different OSes but the devices will interop across the board and software support for these platforms will continue to grow. Just look at how big the Java market for J2ME Series40 devices still is year after Symbian took the position as their flagship OS.

If it was any other manufacturer I would be worried like you are, but people often forget the size of Nokia when they make their ill informed doomsday predictions.
