NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

The apps aren't flying in yet...

Loving the phone.

I think the home screen is a bit lame though. It should have more useful stuff on it. Its huge!!! Like sms preview, more buttons etc.

Has anyone found an app to lock sms' or files with a password? I hate when people ask to look at the phone then snoop around in personal sms'.

Re the home screen- can it be sent to rotate too? Homscreen in landscape would be cool. Most of the time I use the thing in landscape- to have to turn it everytime it returns to home screen sucks.

Was wondering what kind of battery life do you guys/gals get with your phone?
When I had the "dual mode" (or whatever you call it)activated where 3G is also selected then the phones battery lasted for about 2 days with normal use. Since I deactivated it and selected GSM only it seems to have dramatically increased. Im on day 4 now and still going strong :)

Use 2G instead of 3G

The 5800 can use both 2G and 3G phone networks. The advantage of 3G is a very high speed of internet access, the latest 3G networks have a technology called 3.5G HSDPA which lets you use speeds up to many megabits, comparable to PC broadband connections at home. The disadvantage of 3G networks is that they use up a phone's battery more quickly during calls.

The most popular kind of 2G network is called GSM, and the most popular kind of 3G network is called UMTS, and is also known as WCDMA. The 5800 uses GSM for 2G and UMTS/WCDMA for 3G. (Incidentally, there's also a 2G network called CDMA but this is nothing to do with UMTS/WCDMA.)

By default the 5800 uses 3G networks, but automatically switches to 2G when there is no 3G network available in your current location. If you don't need high speed internet access, try switching your phone into 2G-only mode in order to save battery life during phone calls. Here's how to do it on the 5800:

Press the white menu button, select "Settings", select "Connectivity", select "Network", select "Network Mode", select "GSM", select "OK", then press the red button to go back to the front page.

If you want to go back to automatically selecting 3G networks when available, repeat the above process but select "Dual Mode" instead of GSM. If you want to use the internet remember to do switch back to Dual Mode, otherwise your 5800 will be stuck in 2G mode which means a very slow internet connection.

I was surprised, charged my Phone on Friday night and only had to recharge it on Wednesday lunch time again.... and even then it still had 2 bars. I just keep it on default dual mode because i fring quite a bit.

So I am into week one now with the phone and loving it!
Just playing around still (and found out how to delete the 2nd e-mail account), this is my first smartphone.
Still no update!

Anyway, does anyone know how to make certain pics private and NOT show up in the gallery??? :o:D

Yes, REMOVE them from your phone before you let your wife play with it :)

1.4 Garmin Keygen : from here This is the link for mobile XT maps but it is not working anymore. Can someone please help

Hi guys i'm kinda new here.
I got my 5800 last week from mtn. Its an awesome phone. I just have 1 issue which i hope you guys can help me with. I installed garmin mobile xt on the memory card. It works perfectly however when i restart the phone it hangs on the white nokia screen and then switches off. When i remove the memory card it starts up fine and when i delete garmin it works. I managed to exchange my phone with that 7day warranty thing because it had a burnt pixel on the screen as well. Anyone experiencing the same or similar problems?

No problems here, although I did update the firmware before installing any apps.

Thanks i'll try updating my firmware. I returned my phone when it did that and they replaced it, no questions asked. I haven't tried installing garmin on my new phone.

How do you add birthdays to the calender? I see that you can assign a birthday to your contacts but it doesn't add the date to the calender. Does the phone notify you when it's someones birthday using this method?

Open the calendar. Click on options and then choose new entry. This will open a drilldown where you choose anniversary. This will allow you to add birthdays with recurance etc.

I have this phone for 3 weeks now and is very impressed with it. The only negative issue I have is, when somebody phone me his cellnumber show on the phone and not the name as saved in the contactlist. Can it be changed?

When using the default browser, if you set it to load text only, it doesn't even load images which should be in the cache (the 6110 loaded these images under same conditions) - does anyone know how to get this done... I visit some other fora on my phone and the "quote" and "reply" buttons go missing (don't load images to keep data use down).

Does Opera-mini allow this?

That is weird, mine displays the name like on all phones. I think make sure your contacts are stored on the phone and not the Sim, also check your settings in the phone book, when in the phone book go to options and then settings. There are three options, the top two on my phone is set to phone memory so check what yours are on.
