NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

I hope you guys can help, I updated my 5800 to V50.0.005 this morning and everything went well, but now that I have updated my phone, the Media Library
will not pick up any of my MP3's, I store them all in the default Music folder, but when I refresh it does not pick them up at all. Same thing with the Gallery,
but my Video Library works fine.

I can still access and play the mp3s and pictures using the File Manager, it just does not pick them up in the various Libraries.

Do a hard reset, read above for a clue.

Thanks, but alas this did not help.

I also hit problems after V50 - not exactly likes yours but, for example, numerous Java apps were suddenly sized at 0kb and couldn't be deleted. I've bit the bullet, reformatted the memory card, hard reset and started again from scratch, only restoring contacts. Grr. Even then it's not perfect. An app like Handy Calendar installs fine but does not appear in Applications, so I've had to set it as one of my home screen shortcuts, while reinstalling 5GB of music. V50 seems buggy.

Actually, I managed to get Media Player working again but recopying every single song after deleting them from the memory card.

Haven't had a problem since then, and even my gallery is working again. Must have been a corrupt mp3.

v5.000.5 of the software is awesome, the new improved media player fixes everything that irritated me about the old one.

Any of you guys tried Toon Warz and Armageddon Squadron from Ovi Store? Both are free and designed from scratch for touchscreen phones.

Very nice app this. It's available from OVI store for free.
Introduction

Phonelocator periodic is a free service to help you keep tabs on the location of your phone. It runs in the background and can periodically update the phone's location to the Phonelocator server. Updates can also be triggered remotely by sending a text message to the phone that starts with the word 'Update'. You can also nominate a friend to receive a 'buddy message' when the SIM card in your phone is changed. If your phone is stolen and the SIM card is changed, your buddy should receive a text messaged containing the thief's telephone number.

Phonelocator periodic is not intended to be a real time tracker! It's designed to be run all the time and periodically update the phone's location without a noticeable effect on the phone's battery life.

Gmail with fixed icon

I'm not sure if this have been discussed earlier in this topic, so here goes. The Gmail app for the Nokia 5800 or 5230 works great. Looks great too, except for that ugly pixelated icon. So I did *a lot* of searching the web for a solution. Finally figured out how to fix it. So here is a link to a perfectly working Gmail v2.00(6) app with a great looking icon. Here is a screenshot. Enjoy!

Cheers. Do you have a link for the app? I can't find it on my hard drive.

What do you mean? The link is in my post. Am I missing something?

Doh. I thought it was just the icon.
Anyway, if anyone doesn't know. To remove the default clunky navigation buttons and go full screen, go to installed apps from settings >application manager, highlight Gmail and go to options>suite settings. Turn onscreen keyboard off and you're in business.

My review of the phone thus far,
Phone - excellent, Nokia OS: awful
It seems Nokia's OS gets worse with updates
My story:
V20: Beautiful.
V30: Awful, phone hung (had to remove battery just to restart), applications hung.
V40: Good, but V50 came out quite quickly.
V50: Like V30, it hangs, programs exits for no reason. Phone is so much slower, seems to hang when typing. Programs take long to open...
Last week i threw the phone onto my car window due to frustration  - the Maps did not want to load and i was late for a meeting and needed directions. After inserting the battery once again (after it split) - it worked.
I doubt i will buy another Nokia smartphone again.

I have 5 5800s around me - and none of them have the v50 problem you seem to be having. I do know that in the past I've had to hard reset after upgrading to resolve issues though. Still, how could you say v20 was great! It was slooow... 2 of my buddies used their 5800s as bricks before I upgraded them. Now they love their phones.

Sorry dude, but if you have 5 and i have 1 that does not work, does not help me.
A friend also has one (i advised him) and his memory card keeps getting wiped out.
I also forgot to add that now my accelerometer does not work well (i have to shake the phone).
V30 was the worst for me, did a hrd reset then, never work.
In any case the updates are suppose to work - i should not be hard resetting, its like me re-formatting when windows has an update.
Still a great phone, value for money - but i dont beleive in Nokia's OS.

On a plus: The GPS takes now like 5s to find signal, even indoors, and even when the last position was 100kms away.

The only problem I ever get with my 5800 is sometimes when typing, it will lag and when it wakes up it types the wrong letter (alphanumeric). Otherwise, can't complain about the phone.

So now 2 other guys have the same problem as I. And it never used to happen with the older versions (though the even number versions (you know what i mean) were better).
So are Nokia Software Updates any Good? Thye have proved in the past to fiz some problems but create others.

@superskully - I realise my last post wasn't very helpful. :erm: Have you tried hard resets? Nokia Care Centres? Drop-kicks?

Ok, I was joking about the last one... ;)

Thanks. Its not so annoying though as i hardly use my phone much.
Hard reset - i am just 2 lazy.
Will contact Nokia (as i did for V30).
Point is: considering that i use the phone now for basics (calls and sms) and photos and GPS - memory card 80% free: i blame the updates.
As with my N70 - updates made the phone worse.
Nokia make the best phones and affordable and reliable - their software though is not up to scratch (like the old Toyota's). Saying that, i probably still will buy another Nokia instead of the so many other expensive options.

Sometimes you love something so much that you overlook the faults, i.e. until you get so frustrated, you thro the phone out the car window with the window up.
