NOKIA 5800 Tips Tricks & Apps Thread.....

Hi All

Me again....is it possible to load Garmin MobileXT on my 5800 music edition? Don't fancy OVI maps

Thanks!

Any idea on the costs? I believe the CD cost about R10 at Cape UM
That's for the CD. You have to pay to activate it. Around R1000 if I remember correctly.

There are other ways, but you'd have to search for them.

What's wrong with OVI Maps then?

You have to be exact when you enter your destination...... requires the suburb name as well.

Yep, I came across the other ways somewhere here on MYBB

I found the search to be quite helpful in that regard. For instance, I searched for "SunnyPark" (shopping centre) on Saturday, and it found it. No hassles. Plus I like the synchronisation with maps.ovi.com which allows me to find things beforehand, using my laptop.

hey guys, silly question but on my 5230 on the facebook app i can only see that someone has commented/posted on a wall - not the actual full post. clicking it just makes it go to the person's page. Anyone know how to change this? Thanks!

Ovi maps sucks when navigating, sometimes it takes ages to realize you actually did take the turn and seems confused... other than that I like it. Oh yeah, and not being able to pan around when viewing the calculated route sucks. All you can do is zoom in/out.
You can try GarMAP. It's a java app, and you need to download maps on the go like google maps, and navigation is not free. But it's a great app.

Sometimes to cope with the crap search on Ovi Maps, I open up Google Maps and do the search there so I can see where the place is.
Then I switch back to Ovi Maps and manually select that spot on the map.

I think Ovi and Google Maps share favourites if I recall correctly.

On the maps story: I don't think there's any hands-down winner in these stakes - certainly when it comes to South African roads navigation. I've used Ovi Maps, Garmin and NDrive. Garmin's a bit of a dodgy port and feels like an old DOS application, plus it tried to take me down farm roads on the way to Kenton in December when the main, tarred road was in front of me. Ovi's okay-ish, but if it's a bit slow in recognising your turns, you might want to check if you've got assisted navigation on. But it has its foibles. My current personal choice is NDrive - mostly - but if I don't like what it's saying I will switch to have a look at Ovi. I'd use both for the cities. If I was going off-road and away from the towns and cities it would probably have to be Garmin, certainly for hiking.

There's no single answer about which is best and all of these feel unsatisfying, as if they could and should be better. For example, Garmin has one feature that trumps the others - it automatically switches to night mode when it gets dark. The others don't. I would expect this feature to be standard. But it also wanted to first take me around the block from my house to drive past my front door before it would send me on my way.

I still prefer a map book but if I don't have one or I'm really stuffed with directions, I'll use NDrive.

I believe they used to in old versions but not any more. I just did a quick test and my starred item in Google Maps did not show under my Ovi Maps favourites. It's a bummer because it would be very helpful.

Okay, I'm starting to dislike this phone. I've had it for a few months now. It seems to freeze randomly in certain apps. Earlier I was trying to send an SMS, and after I typed the SMS and went to choose a contact, it froze on that page.
It seems to be the standard Nokia apps that freeze most of the time. I can sometimes leave it and it will shut the app down, but the easiest method when I'm out of patience is to just switch it off and on again.
I did a hard reset in the hopes of fixing this, but it hasn't helped.

I wonder if the freezes are related to the Periodic Phonelocator app I have running? Seems to have started around when I installed it but I'm not sure. Also don't really want to get rid of it in case my phone gets stolen.

I'd consider swapping it for an Android phone like the Hero, but I suppose nobody with an Android phone would want this.
When I eventually get a new phone, it will probably be Android.

Yeah, I'm looking at the HTC Legend myself. Have you tried disabling the Phonelocator to see if that helps?

Guys, when using Ovi maps, the GPS signal whatever, does it cost money?

Only if you go online, but this can be changed in the options, using just GPS is free (except the battery used  ) but Assisted-GPS is the one that costs as it connects to the net

hehehe, yeah the GPS kills battery. Data usage is very low when connected to the net.
What i find irritating is the Unable to connect message that pops up periodically when driving through an area where it can't get a data connection. Anyone know how to disable that message?

Yeah but I see kit download like 70KB etc. Do they charge me for this? Or is the GPS data free?
