Hi all, I'm trying to set up my wife's MTN contract Nokia 6230 as a bluetooth model on my laptop. I have previously done this for my old Nokia with Vodacom and that connection works well and is very stable (this is how I am posting this query now..)

I have previously requested the correct setting from MTN for the phone, and by now have received it numerous times.. MyMTN etc..

Now the phone is connected via bluetooth - no problem
I can dial into MTN *99#, using the standard bluetooth modem as installed by Win XP - again no problem.

This is where it gets strange - I can connect to the internet for approx 1 minute, before I get a windows message that the connection is down.

I have managed to recreate the problem in 2 cities and on two seperate Nokia 6230 MTN contract phones - whats going on??

Kind Regards
Ulrich

Good day,

Maybe try a diffrent profile e.g *99*1# or *99*2# or go to control panel go to phone and modems go to modems click on properties go to advanced and type in the following string at+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet”,””,0,0

Let me know if you come right?

Hi MTNDD
I'll give the two options you have provided a try. Thankx. I will accurately document and post all process steps, errors etc. which I will post here for root cause analysis.

I may request a PM later with you to provide you with the contract number to allow MTN technical to investigate server logs based on the phone / connection timestamp. Ulrich

My settings are:

AT+CGDCONT=,,"internet"<cr>

Can someone advise if, and how, the settings provided by MTNDD will affect performance?

@ MTNDD

I can always connect using the settings I gave above, but I'm only connecting at GPRS/EDGE I think. What I'm trying to establish is what settings will give me 3G connectivity on my N6630. I alos have no idea where my settings came from - I didn't set it up like that - and I assume it picked it up from the N6630 phone when I used it as a modem.

Can anyone rationalise the modem settings, i.e. what settings will get me 3G connectivity when I am in a 3G coverage area ..... because I am now thinking that my current settings may only be for GPRS/EDGE ... is that a possibility?

Hi atomcrusher

Make sure that your phone is set to dual mode under network settings and not GSM. Your phone will distinguish the best connection type automatically

On a nokia you anly have 2 type in " AT+CGDCONT=,,"internet"<cr> "
as the string and *99# as the dialed number.

On a sony erricson and samsung i belive u have 2 put in which profile it must use and all that ie " at+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet” " and *99**1# i think.

Dear MTNDD

At 21:00 I commenced with my MTN testing

I have tried the 3 different profile numbers with no change in the result - namely on all three I manage to connect successfully to MTN but after approx 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes, it appears that the data (as listed in the windows network status window) that I receive from MTN terminates, yet the connection is still seen as active by Windows. No Bluetooth errors are evident - that part of the connection seems stable.
After another minute of inactivity the connection is terminated and a Windows error message: Link to “MTN GPRS” failed, reconnection pending - appears

This was tried a number of times between 21:00 and 21:09 0 My last attempt - After being connected for 2 minutes, and receiving 69,526 bytes it seems as if MTN stops sending data

Using the advanced initialisation string “at+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet”,””,0,0” as supplied actually prevents the Nokia6230 to operate as a modem, and Windows reports a “modem” error. Removing the string immediately takes me to the scenario above.

The only problem I can see may be on the Nokia 6230 -

Current settings as accessed via:

Menu item - Settings / connectivity / GPRS / GPRS connection = when needed
Menu item - Settings / connectivity / GPRS / GPRS modem settings / Active access point = MyMTN
Menu item - Settings / connectivity / GPRS / GPRS modem settings / GPRS access point = internet (note: I have tried “MyMTN” with no success)

Menu item - Services / Settings / Connection settings / Active Service settings = MTN-DATA (having downloaded, request and been sent service setting I have 10 different data sets, all duplicates of the MTN sent MTN-DATA and MTN-MMS sets. The Nokia only gives me an option to activate these listed sets (but not to delete or edit them) - which I believe is part of my problem - I suspect I have the wrong set - I need MTN-GPRS or something similar, where the password is blank..

Does someone have a step by step guide on ALL settings on all menu location this particular phone (Nokia 6230) for MTN GPRS? I believe MTN only sends MTN WAP and MTN DATA settings - and those may be for the 6230i...??

Regards
Ulrich

What BlueTooth software do you have on the pc? if you use blue soleil try pairing the two devices and click on the dialup networking icon on the blue soleil panel.

Mine worked like that without any need to create a dialup connection in any way.

The above uses the default settings set on the phone.

Hi Ulrich

I have had a similar problem with a Sony Erricsson and Virgin.

In the phone and modem settings on the control panel select your modem properties and undet diagnostics??? there is a query modem button.

Check what it says where you see the cdgcont settings. If it is set to "internet" then it is still set to the VC settings. "myMTN" or "mtninternet" are MTN settings.

If these are not set or you are having problems then try sending the commands via hyper terminal.

Good luck.
