I think it is locked to the MTN network. I don't have the PUK number... how can I unlock this phone?

The PUK number only applies to your SIM card! If you know your phone number, then your network should be able to provide your PUK number.
No 6680's in South Africa should have ever been network locked!
Possibly the handset has a security code set and if you have forgotten this it can be reset by a dealer on presentation of proof of ownership.
