Nokia 808 Pureview annouced

No doubt this is my next device. The first phone to challenge the 1 1/2 year old N8 as the king of camera phones. Just hope the SA SPs bring it in!

I was whetting my appetite today by doing some reading and watching some HD YouTube videos filmed with the 808. The picture and sound quality are insane. Now I know this place is a bit of an Android and iOS haven but I'm going to share some of what I find even if it's only for my viewing later :)

I was reading this "technical" article which I found rather interesting :

Nokia 808 Pureview Rich Recording demo - how awesome is this sound quality? Said to be able to record distortion-free audio at levels of up to 140 dB!

And then the video quality! This video also demos the ability to focus on any part of the screen on the fly. The ability to zoom in while videoing - up to 4x lossless zoom at 1080p. This camera phone is insane,

If this was an Android or iOS device people would be trampling each other to get their hands on it. And the biggest joke is that Symbian in it's new guise as Nokia Belle is hardly recognisable as the Symbian^3 that so many criticised. And the 808 comes with FP1 and is rumoured to still be getting Carla and possibly Donna updates!

DSLR-territory camera
Full HD 1080p video recording at 30fps
Silent, smooth and LOSSLESS zoom up to 4X
Dolby Rich Recording (undistorted sound quality up to 140dB)
Dolby Headphone Technology
FM-transmitter (think built-in iTrip)
Free Turn-By-Turn Navigation

Yet people would rather fawn over quad-core CPUs and 2GB RAM?! Pffttt. This is innovation!

Thats because once you begin using Symbian for Social Networking, Web browsing, Texting/IM, Office, Games etc...you begin to realise its not worth the hardware. Belle isn't that great and in some points is a step back from Anna, if they had MeeGo on the 808PV then it would be THEE perfect smartphone with great hardware, and incredible software.

Really? You honestly feel it is that bad? I use the device regularly for all those things and have never found the process difficult or onerous.

Social networking - there are many applications to use. But I know, suddenly it is not cool to say "there's an app for that" when it applies to Nokia and Symbian but it has always been perfectly acceptable for Android and iOS. Gravity must be one of the best Twitter applications across all platforms. For Facebook you have a number to choose from but I personally prefer using the browser and the website anyway because friends with tight privacy settings are excluded when you use a third party application. If you really feel the need to use something different then FMobi is great too.

Web browsing - I'll admit to not being a fan of the built in browser but this is probably due to the fact that I have never used it extensively so am not as quick finding my way around as I am with Opera Mobile, my browser of choice. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I do fall back on the built in browser on occasion for it's flash support.

Texting/IM - I am not even sure how to argue this one as I fail to see what is wrong here. Perhaps you can explain.

Office - Huh again? Not sure what you mean. The N8 came with a full office suite built in which included the ability to edit. If you are not happy with it for some reason then there are others out there. In saying that I have never used my phone to edit office documents. It is never going to be a wonderful experience on a tiny device. I have a laptop to do work efficiently.

Games - again you'll need to explain. I have plenty games on my device. No doubt it has slowed as Symbian dies down but I tend to use games on a phone to waste a little time when needed. I don't do hard core gaming on my phone. I have a gaming PC for my son to do this on. I do find it interesting that you feel a phone would need to be a hard core gaming device and a full business phone. Surely these are two different segments and this is something Nokia has always catered for.

What does Meego give you in terms of those issues you listed that makes it so much more superior?

Ok clint, calm down...

If those vids are to believed it really is an awesome product....

There are many more of them around. They can be believed.

You ask me to calm down yet the amount of noise being generated by an underwhelming Samsung Galaxy S III is deafening...

Please name a couple? After using Belle for 3 months and then trying a friend's N8 running Anna, I couldn't believe the difference. Clunky, less intuitive UI and not as responsive. Belle is Symbian refined.

I can sense you're upset that Elop killed Meego, but I'm really struggling to understand how Belle FP1 can make the 808's hardware worthless. There aren't many things the OS can't do that Android can. If any.

Love my N8! Camera is superb! Can't wait for 808 PV to come to SA! Now we need more apps & games :)

Unfortunately apps and games for Symbian are likely to slow to a trickle due to the announcement made by Elop but there is also plenty around to keep you occupied.

I'm often at a loss myself to understand some of the comments directed at Symbian. I usually assume they last used it when it was S60v3 but here he specifically mentions Belle. Strange.

You took the words straight out of my mouth.. Its the very reason I jumped into getting the N8. When I saw the 808 I really wanted it.. But im not going to suffer for another 2 years with an epic camera but apps that just don't cut it. Definately going for either the Galaxy S3 or the HTC One X for my next handset

And the choice is yours to make. The camera takes precedence for me. For the rest I already answered in detail above.

I'm going for the 808 myself once MTN asks you to sell your soul (or about R370) for it. I cannot wait.

Also, there's literally nothing Symbian isn't capable of compared to other mobile OSes. The apps just don't cut it? What , was Instagram too important to miss out on? Not many of the features available on the iPhone 4s with Siri work because we're not in one of Apple's preferred regions and we don't get the same mapping and local events that you see in Windows Phone.

Symbian's for those who want a converged device, not an internet tablet that fits in your pocket.

~...Remembers the magnificent enticing advertising of the Nokia N97....~ :erm:

That had a FM Transmitter too, which worked, if you were within a foot of your radio's antenna, flag$h!p(t)* phone my foot...

Oh it also had that turn by turn navigation, that led you on a wild goose chase, turn by turn ...

The 808 is not the N97. That's like comparing the One X to the HTC Dream. Case Closed.

No thanks, if I were looking for a DSLR camera, I would choose Canon, not this marketing gimick.

Marketing gimmick? You're uninformed, clearly...

It'll be a while before any other smartphone manufacturer comes close to this level of innovation :D

Bad news for Symbian here.
All Symbian fans and users might want to sit down while reading this. According to the Product Marketing Manager for Nokia South Europe Mathias Fiorin, Symbian Carla has been cancelled.

Pity
