Nokia battles with weak handset sales

But, whose expectations really matter anyway?

Nokia had given a guidance of a 27% increase in sales of Lumias, it achieved 32%. The Q-to-Q loss went down and its Lumia sales keep rising.

So called industry experts ignore what the company itself says, which would be a positive estimate and come up with their lofty estimates so that in the end the news that is made is bad news.

Given the circumstance, Nokia is performing very well and is well on the path of recovery. Even Forbes was saying Nokia is bleeding feature phones and selling Lumias at the right rate.

This is a none story. Nokia is on the right path to recovery from the facts of Q2 2013.

They don't mention ASP fell from 191 Euros to 157. The increase in sales was because they cut the selling price, not because of increased demand. Not something to harp on about.
 
So how about some Android phones now? No? Carry on failing then.

That's quite typical of them. They'll harp on about an increase in numbers using percentages without revealing the figures behind them are quite pitiful. As mentioned, they should listen to the market and release an Android range.

If they were to release an android phone I would be seriously interested. I love the design of the Nokia's but WP is not my cup of tea.

Likewise, I would love to have Nokia build quality with Android. Even better would be if it was stock Android with updates provided by Google. Nokia would have even less to do to support the phone after release.

meh, might be in the minority in this thread, but I love my Lumia with WP8 thanks very much.

If Nokia had to build for Andoid they'd have to quadruple the battery capacity and throw in extra cores to feed the beast. Not to mention play second fiddle to Samsung and have no bargaining power with Google around the Android OS.

Before Nokia started releasing Lumias, everyone was like "meh, nokia, let them die, good riddance!". Even Google didn't want to bargain when Nokia approached them to use Android. They did what they had to do to survive. The money from the MS partnership got them through, and they are now creating some very compelling products, thanks to Microsoft. Without that partnership, they'd be six feet under already. The turn around may take a while, but these products are quite frankly phenomenal, and the OS fits them perfectly. Brand new speedy OS that doesn't need a 747 engine to run.

My next phone will be a Nokia...

A Nokia feature phone that is, hehe! Probably a 301. My current Classic 6303 has started losing keypad buttons. I always have a secondary phone on another network, think I will go with that SIMSonke prepaid from TM.

Have a little samsung throw away phone. Thing cost like R160 and doesn't need to charge for like 2 weeks. Comes in handy when going places you don't want your main phone stolen of filled with water. Also helpful if you've temporarily misplaced your phone.

When asked about Nokia's choice of Windows Phone 7 as its smartphone system, Schmidt said that Google would have loved to see Nokia pick Android instead. Google tried to convince Nokia to choose Android, and it can still make that decision in the future, Schmidt said.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, a former Microsoft executive, said here earlier this week that had the mobile-phone maker chosen Android, the market would have become a duopoly, with Apple and Android dominating. He said he preferred a three-horse race, and going with Microsoft would give Nokia a larger share of services revenue.

About that he was right. Fight to survive, that is. I wonder how long it will be before Elop has to fight for his job?

Doesn't say Schmidt was keen to give Nokia what it wanted, only that he would have been happy to have Nokia on Android.... which i'm sure he would have (on his terms i'm sure). That he didn't give them what they required to make Android work for them speaks to the attitude they had: "We're bigger than you, we don't need you, you are out of options".

That bolded bit... are you saying that schmidt's opinion is that Nokia didn't go with them solely because of Elop's past with Microsoft? If that was the case, why did he meet with Google before Microsoft then? Contrary to popular belief, when you become a CEO, you are no longer employed by your previous company... and Elop had thousands of jobs in his hands. He wouldn't bargain that big unless the chips were down and MS was offering something a lot better than Google was.

Google had no need to negotiate with Nokia and give them favourable terms. They knew Nokia had a dud OS, and they thought there wouldn't be any way out for them but to do what Google wanted. That would make perfect business sense... only MS threw a spanner in the works by making a kick ass OS, and helping to fund Nokia.

Either way you cut it, you wouldn't be sitting here asking Nokia to make an android Lumia if it wasn't for MS.
