Nokia: Going (Micro) soft

How convenient to not mention that the Ovi store will be intergrated with Windows Marketplace? That's going to give Nokia an edge over other WP7 phones.

my 1st Win phone was Htc Tytyn II sporting Win 6.0 prof.i loved windows OS since then.iam still clued to Windows phones.in 2009 i tried another Sony Ericson with Symbian,it couldn't even even accept Google Maps at that time.so i didn't bother to go for Symbian again.

Got you... have you tried Android though? Total Windoze killer!

That is 100% true.

I for one will support the Nokia and Microsoft marriage. I currently have the Nokia N8 which runs Symbian 3 and it is awesome, but if I could, I would love to have WP7 on it instead just for a little something "new".

I am a Nokia fan and I will only judge on their failures if I've experienced it myself. The author is stabbing in the dark here.

Also never tried Android?

As soon as a new product gains ground, they come up with some phony charge without any merit, that would never stand up in court. They dont pursue the charge, only mention that the infringement exists, thereby frightening off investors/big business- after all who wants to invest in something that may be shut down just after you implement it.

I hate to break it to you, but this is something every large multinational does. It is standard practice to intimidate smaller companies by throwing large lawsuits at them, because larger companies have much more capital to spare for legal fees and can make it drag on for a long time, bleeding the smaller company dry. Usually, this is with the aim of getting the small guy to reach to an out-of-court settlement that suits the big company.

Though, the latest fad seems to be to throw out a lawsuit in the US against a big rival, and then asking the ITC to block sales of the 'offending' goods, e.g. the latest LG - Sony spat.

Android's better than Windows Mobile 6, sure, but then it'd be kind of embarassing if it wasn't better than an old OS!

I did some time in Android - it actually felt too much like WM6 for me. Don't get me wrong, Android's great, but it's still very much a OS you have to curate to get it to be useful for you. I'm now on WM7, and it's the only "it just works" mobile OS out there at the moment (I had an iPhone 3G/3GS for 3 years, and am SO over that entire ecosystem). Each to their own, and Android isn't the right fit for a lot of people.

Windoze? Seriously? I bet you also use that lame M$ acronym too. I have used Android and do like it. I also happen to like WP7. I believe it is a very good OS and considering it is still version 1.0 it will only get better.

It's not a case of Windows Phone 7 being so far behind, it's just that Android is so far ahead.

In terms of? Sure WP7 needs some missing features like copy and paste and multitasking but those features are coming. I am just curious how far ahead Android is. Unless you mean user base, where you are correct, Andriod is very far ahead, hence the Nokia and Microsoft partnership.

i don't understand why this article is so negative, then again its an opinion piece so whatever.

These are the facts as i see it:
1.) perception: apple is seen as restrictive, android as too open. A nokia-ms collaboration would fall in the middle which would be a popular choice for many.
2.) market share: ms now has the number two spot in terms of handsets OS; nokia has a refreshing up to date OS. This will lead to increased app production leading to more handset sales.
3.) name brand: cut it whichever way you want, people are familiar with ms and nokia. It follows that a platform as such would see high uptake among new users of smartphones.

So i ask, why so serious?:)

ovi store doesn't contain any wp7 apps. it may be adjusted to do this, but i fail to see why any developer would use it when there's already an existing marketplace built for this express purpose.
the only service which nokia can leverage across to this relationship is maps, and even then it will be whitelabelled and provided on competitive handsets.
i wouldn't be surprised if msft buys navteq from nokia in the next 18 months.

What happened to Meego :(

intel is carrying on with it, nokia is supposedly releasing the first handset in q4.
i can't see them putting much effort into it though, considering their main thrust is with wp7 now.
meego and symbian were part of the previous strategy which the shareholders felt had failed.
the first meego tab was recently released, although it's far from ready for mass-market adoption iirc.

That is actually not quite correct. In SA more than 70% of all software developers use MS products as their development base and would be more than keen to develop their Silverlight skills (capable of running OOB on WP7) to develop mobile business and social applications to run on the WP7 OS - it creates tremendous opportunities, especially in the financial sector. The other big plus is that MS are looking into preparing Silverlight to run on Android - which will really open up the platform. That's why I re-iterate - Android might me the current mobile OS leader, but will it be in 2-3 years' time - and that is probably why Nokia saw the light ?

The N8's hardware specs does not really allow for a modern OS.... only 600Mhz CPU & 256MB RAM.

Was about to say that as well, but Android can run on those specs.

It'll be quite a bit of work, though.

oh well, i won the phone, so the next one i buy probably next year or 2013 - see what sort of tech is around then, i cant imagine what else they could add to phones in the future, full hd 1080 recording?, 18megapixel stills, what else can they add?

I like Windows Mobile but I haven't tried anything else. I think WP7 won't take off until they mature a bit more.

They only put the bare minimum that creates a fuss. It's not in their interest to really perform (yet). People are still taken with the lower spec. I recall a manufacturer releasing a 10mp cameraphone with optical zoom lens in singapore... we never saw it.
