IIRC WP8 will be able to upgrade to WP9 (and possibly beyond - probably depending on hw requirements).

Microsoft has said that they'll support all Windows Phone models for two years from release, which pretty much ties up with most phone contracts.

Windows Phone 7 was out for two years before it was replaced with new hardware and WP8.

With the way Microsoft's working this strategy, I don't think WP8 users will be able to upgrade to WP9.

He just mentions "an upgrade path." That could be intepreted as a number of really confusing and opposing things, including supporting WP9 on current WP8 devices. However, I don't believe that's the case.

The Microsoft Product Lifecycle support page indicates Windows Phone 8 and 7.8 are already past their lifecyle start dates. According to the listing, Microsoft plans to end mainstream support for Windows Phone 8 in July 2014, just 16 months from now, and support for Windows Phone 7.8 will end later in September 2014.

Regarding the schedule, Microsoft said it “will make updates available for the operating system on your phone, including security updates, for a period of 18 months after the lifecycle start date. Distribution of the updates may be controlled by the mobile operator or the phone manufacturer from which you purchased your phone.” Microsoft hasn't made any commitment to updates for every compatible device.

Make of it what you will, but Microsoft is definitely thinking about planned obsolescence, if they aren't already doing that with the current generation of phones.

They could still do it the same way Apple handles iOS, though and that's certainly a good option for consumers and the brand itself. Today you can go out and buy an iPhone 4s that's still in stock somewhere and run the latest version of iOS on it.
