I put my name down this weekend to be notified when the Nokia Lumia 930 becomes available at my local store for upgrade. Strange that there isn't already a thread here by my reckoning.

I'm moving across from Android-land, and am looking forward to the challenge. This is definitely (IMO) the Windows Phone device to have. Beautiful 5" HD screen, nice and fast, and just well, desirable.

It could also be the last of the Nokia phones as we know them. Probably not, but possibly.

Of course, it could just be me. ;)

I'm on Cell C, and I put my name in a book. ;)

I'll check up on them in a week's time.

Thoughts? Is it everything you hoped?

Yeah phone feels really good. Does get a bit hotter than my 820 got while gaming but it's not unbearable like people made it out, and it's only during gaming and using Here drive. Don't know why other people get it "for no reason"

Other than that, no issues, really good solid phone. A bit bigger than I expected though, but getting used to the size, in fact when I held my 820 again it felt so tiny.
I got a white one so my back is already a bit scratched due to the fact that it slides around alot in my car because I place it above the ashtray :/
Getting a Nillkin cover in the next few weeks, don't really want to but will see how that cover feels.

OS wise it's obviously still the same(especially since I set everything up the way it used to look), a bit faster but still solid and fluid as always.

Just like the The Doc stated a top class OS combined with quality hardware makes for a winner :)

Hey Doc, the white one says sold out, or stock shortage. Voda online only have the black in stock...
I have a 920 in white, not sure if i should wait or just buy the black.

Btw - do you use double tap to wake, to see notifications, as no glance screen ( or was there some mention of glance coming back in the new firmware denim)

Depends on your preference hey, I wanted black but Cellucity only had White and I was impatient after the long wait.
However the black one has the black coloured aluminium frame so not sure if I would've liked that.

Yeah I use double tap to wake. I don't think they will bring glance back as they were pretty set on the fact that it was a limitation of the screen they used.

Tap to wake will work perfectly fine for me - I've used it for ages on my LG G2, and seen it work just fine on a buddy's 1520.

So first problem with the white one...
This weekend I was working on my car. Used my phone a few times without thinking and when I checked again it was full of oily, grimy goodness.
Wiped it off with a wet cloth and its looking better but the dirt sunk into those marks I mentioned earlier.

930 owners: I heard on a UK podcast yesterday that the 930 may not have the best value for money, given the recent releases (835, etc.)

Do you recommend the 930 for SA users? I'm coming from Android and really want to give Windows Phone a chance. Should I consider the 1520 / 1020 instead?

Recent releases(830 and 730) are Mid Range phones.
The 930 is high end, so there is quite a difference.
I'm not sure about the value for money part, since I suck at looking at those things.

I can't tell you what you should be getting but some info regarding the other two phones you mentioned:
1520 has the same specs as a 930 but bigger screen and has a SD Card slot.
1020 has that 41MP going for it.

Thanks. 1020 is 12 months old already, so support for it can't be for much longer. I have a 1520 in the office, and it is BIG. Hence my interest in the 930. Does the pentile screen count against it in practice?

There have been a lot of complaints online about purple fringing but I can tell you that the unit which I have is perfect. Its an awesome display. Very sharp display, great colour and view-ability outdoors.

Few questions on that...
Did you update all your apps? Including the Display app?
Also on very low light conditions and with your display set to automatic do you still not notice any purple hue on you screen?

Yeah, I'm religious when it comes to updates. Running the dev preview as well.

Have not noticed any purple fringing (always use automatic display settings).
