Nokia may need Microsoft aid

Analysts have attributed Nokia’s decline in large part to its late response to Apple Inc, whose iPhone redefined the smartphone market in 2007, and some see a marriage with Microsoft as possibly a last chance to turn the group around...

I was always very happy with the build quality of Nokia devices. Had Nokia chosen Android - I think they would have done very well.

Why would they have done well? Then they would just be running another commoditized platform. Other than Samsung, no one is really making money off of Android

And that would differ from Windows Phone how?

Or did you not see Samsung Omina's or HTC or LG or Dell or other Windows Phones on the market?

At least they should have spread the risk a little. They did not have to focus on Android just make them available. They could still have focused on Windows Phones in their ads, something the Other OEM's dont do.

At the moment they are the premier Windows Phone manufacturer, and have a lot of of very good, custom apps for the platform. (And they are driving features in WP7, which no other manufacturer has the ability to)
It allows them to stand out from the crowd. It at least gives them a fighting chance. Whether it works, only time will tell. But I suspect it will

It is darkest before dawn.

In defence of my support for Nokia, which at this time seems like a tragedy waiting to happen, I think that Nokia and Windows' decision to partner is great because they offer an alternative.

IMO, having only two companies providing the prefered mobile software (iOS and Android) and two providing the prefered hardware (Samsung and Apple) is unsustainable for my pocket and an ailing global economy.

We need competition and the price reductions that come with it. Further, competition is good for value for money in terms of product innovation and development.

MS should bail out Nokia if need be - as a long term strategy to keep the heat on the other 2 or 3 and for it to be profitable.

Having used all of the available smartphone OS's(Android, iOS, Symbian and Windows Phone), Windows Phone as a smartphone OS blows the others out the water for ease of use and the pure slickness of the UI.

Yes there isn't that many apps available for it YET, but the WP market place is growing quite rapidly with most apps that I need on my phone already available.

I still prefer to have Android on my tablet purely because it does work great on a tablet and I can do all my work remotely from the tablet which is great if I don't have my laptop with me.

In 3 years time, maybe 5, when Android has fragmented itself to death, the Windows / Nokia marriage will make a lot more sense and Windows will be one of the two big OS players. Most likely still with Apple in the other corner.

But maybe the two in the corners end up with only 5% of the market ?

This whole scenario is looking more and more like VHS (multiple manufacturers) vs Beta & Philips formats - the latter two were also superior.

Especially now that HTC and others (Sony) are making a comeback.
