Nokia N8 camera samples - throw away your iPhone and DSLR

I have seen some of those 5D rigs on TV - impressive stuff ! They shoot 1920x1080 @ 24fps which perfect for movies. I know its not anything near a Red One but it shows how easily the boundaries of what a device is made for can be shifted. I read a while ago that they are working on a full HD video recording CMOS chip for phones so imagine what will be possible when that hits the market.
 
Oh yes!! HD video is still gonna be big!! Fortunately our bandwidth is slowly but surely becoming cheaper and faster so it'll be easier to upload and download all that HD video :)
 
Yes, and the maybe James Cameron can shoot AVATAR 2 on his N8. That would be awesome. I might even consider doing a Maxim Photo shoot with one of those and throw away my DSLR. Or wait, my iPhone with over 400,000 available applications that I can download can go to the dustbin too. LMAO
 
Lines are coming close for DSLR quality - there are some really awesome photos out there. From what I read about the House finale they found the 5D a pleasure to work with - especially in places where it was cramped.

It'll only start being a serious consideration if and when lenses are made for phones though :D Till then, I'll stick with my 20D thanks.
 
As soon as they make lenses for phones people will not be able to slip them into their pockets that easily. The old saying "the best camera is the one you have with you" is where phone cameras ace the rest time and time again.
 
Oh yah undoubtedly but if you're going out with the intention of shooting something specific you can't beat SLR. Though I'm sure with some thought you could probably even get a flash to fire.

Ha ha - the saying should actually be "the best camera is the one you have with you except if you're shooting a wedding" ;)
 
Yeah of course if you set out to take pictures or if it is in your line of work you will come prepared. Most photographers I know go with two identical bodies when they cover events, just to be on the safe side. Still, often at weddings and other events it is often one of the guests with their phone or C-series Kodak that gets a priceless shot and shares it on facebook. These make quite a nice addition to your selection of professional picture from the event.

On the other hand you get nut-cases like me that go about trying very hard to take nice pics with a phone just because its a phone and it has a camera - which is strange enough to begin with really. I was very excited before the N86 8mpx went live, and then when I saw the reviews and early EXIFs I realized it really was nothing more than a N85 with a new camera module - so I forgot about it. This time round it seems we have a real image king in our hands. While Symbian^3 might not be all its cracked up to be the shooter will be. Besides, Symbian^1 (S60 5th) is good enough.
 
True, the images are good on the phone, but don't get too excited. I think the article in your first post is making the camera sound like "WOW!!! OH MY WORD!!! WOW" when it should be more like "ok, not bad".
Why do I say this? well, they make the sensor size sound like it's huge. Here's a quote from the article: "which is an impressive number on its own. Even if Nokia N8 was a dedicated digital camera, its sensor would still be considered large."
In my opinion - not really!! Yes, it is slightly larger than other camera phones or even some standard digital cameras but it's still nowhere near a "good size".

They compare the sizes of sensors. Now let's compare the 1/1.8" (which is slightly bigger than the Nokia's) to the APS-C (entry level DSLR) or the 35mm (pro DSLR). Even an entry level DSLR has a sensor almost 10x larger than the Nokia's. A pro DSLR has a sensor about 25x larger than the Nokia's.
So, for a phone - good, for a camera - not even close!! And no, a muk 'n druk is not a real camera, it's a toy - he he ;)
 
It's a good size sensor compared to consumer point and shoot cameras, which are rapidly becoming obsolete as it would seem. Obviously it can't be compared to DSLR's.

Sorry about all the techno jargon, it's just that the average person on the street thinks a cellphone is just as good at taking photos as a "real" camera. I know you don't, but I'm just hoping that some of those ppl will read this thread and catch a wake up.

Don't you just love those ppl who say they have a 8mp camera on their phone and thus they can take the same quality pictures as a 8mp DSLR - yeah, right!!!!
And those who look at a photo on a cellphone's screen and say "wow, your camera is so clear" - they don't even realize that they're comparing screens and not cameras. Ha ha!!
 
Now those are very valid points and people should start to pay attention to things like that. Another thing that feels a little dumb to me is X times optical zoom. The other day someone asked me if they should get a Kodak Z1015 (10mp, 15x zoom) like mine or settle for an older Z812 (8mp, 12x zoom) with "less zoom". It took me a while to explain to them that the 12x zoom model actually has more reach because it starts out at 36mm where as the 15x model starts at 28mm and only gets up to 420 mm.

True! I prefer to know what the mm values are for the zoom, not just the x :)
