Nokia N8 Hands-On

What does Nokia's Symbian swan-song offer to the market it still rules?

Here's the launch schedule from the PR company:

  1. Media 1:1 experience preview sessions: 17 & 18 August (today and tomorrow)
  2. 8 x Nokia N8s in 8 weeks (give-away leading up to pre-order campaign): starts 30 August
  3. Pre-order campaign: starts 27 September
  4. Media Review programme: starts 4 October
  5. Consumer review programme: 25 October
  6. Nokia Create Challenge: starts 1 November - "During the challenge consumers will tell us what they would do with their N8. The top submissions will receive an N8 to do just that and the overall voted winner will win an all expenses paid trip to the Northern Lights in 2011."
  7. Photographic Challenge: to be finalised

Patrick Henchie confirmed that the N8 would come bundle with a lifetime license for Ovi Maps as well as a 6-month subscription to Ovi Music Unlimited (the rebranded "Comes With Music" service).

The package also comes with the USB and HDMI cables needed to connect the N8 to displays and USB mass storage devices.

Cool styling, too bad about the Symbian.

They really need to get rid of the Symbian OS, what a piece of crap!!!

"Just three months after the N8 was announced Nokia told Reuters that it would be the last time an N-series device would run a Symbian Platform OS."

Yeah, I did. So? Why are they releasing their flagship phone with an OS that will die soon....? Just imagine how bad the future updates/support will be on this thing. Nokia already have a crap track record when it comes to updates, this thing will be nothing but an outdated brick in a year or two and no amount of cool hardware can fix that.

Speak of the devil!

Symbain is being discontinued on the N-Seires, not the other phones. I read that some apps from MeeGo will be able to "interact" with Symbian 3 -how true that is, I don't know...but I don't think it's a complete lost cause. We'll have to wait and see what the phone is like once it's released. Nokia seriously has to do something spectacular if they want to stay in the game. (I just posted 10mins ago where I compare Vista to "old Symbian" and 7 to Symbain 3...they may look the same, but they are light years apart. At least that's what it looks like in all the reviews I saw. Only real life hands-on experience will confirm or debunk that.)
Anyway...we'll have to wait and see.....

Too little too late, for me at least. Glad I ditched Nokia after a close to 10 year loyalty. Nokia just aren't innovative enough. Android phone's are all the rage right now! You can never get bored of an Android phone.

+1
the last "flagship" N97 is so behind other smartphone's I kick myself for spending money on that garbage...A year later and ANY Android phone has it beat.
s60v5 is the stupid stepson left to play in the mud.

For those that might be interested the PR agency gave us the schedule for the launch of the N8. I've also included some info they passed on about the N8's package and the future of Symbian^3 that I didn't include in the article as I didn't want to dilute the "hands on" info.

What I love about Nokia is that they are solid and they work very well for me. My E71 has not missed a beat in almost two years, the Mail For Exchange app is awesome!

I'm still going to keep the E71, and get the N8 as my "cool" phone. And great value for money by the looks of it.

All this for R 5 500. :D

FM Transmitter

Only reason I buy Nokia = FM transmitter. I guess if my new car has USB their last selling point will be gone and I'll move over to greener territory.

I looked at the / iPhone4 / HTC Desire / Samsung Galaxy

The deal on this one looks good -- especially the Camera

Please can you provide more info on the "give-away" / Challenges / Prizes / Competitions
( Would like to get our local camera club involved )
I have some ideas for "Nokia Create Challenge"

IF I can get one this way ( win / give-away ) all the better :D

Nokia need to get with the times, they're lacking Multitouch, smooth scrolling, 3D gaming and sophisticated API's on their OS.

Almost all the Android phones have FM transmitters.

Hrm... Oversight on my part for not mentioning that Symbian^3 has multitouch, but it's implied in the capacitive screen specification.

As per the article, scrolling is smooth once an application has launched (except for the Nokia Social app I used).

There wasn't space to mention it, but the N8 has a hardware 3D graphics accelerator built-in. What Nokia (and the N8) need now are developers to build 3D games for the platform that make use of the hardware.

As for the API, I can't really comment since I haven't looked at a Symbian SDK since the original S60, but Symbian Platform uses Qt now, which means it's plenty "sophisticated." Depending on what exactly was meant by "sophisticated," of course.
