Hi there,

I have a Nokia N82 and I would like to connect to the internet on my laptop via the usb cable. I am trying to get HSDPA speeds but using the phone as a modem I can only reach EDGE speeds, 460.8k if i'm not mistaken. Actual speed I get using openweb speedtest is 24k which is very low as I understand it. First of all I live in the Randfontein area, specifically Culemborg Park. Firstly I'm not sure that I have hsdpa towers in the area and as a result of that I would like to know who I need to kill to get them!

Anyway, i'm all over the place on the matter. If you can comment on any of the issues mentioned above please do so. I would be very grateful.

Thank You kindly

The Nokia phones connected via USB always report this speed, but you will be able to get much higher speeds, provided you have the coverage.

With RS-232 devices the speed reported by Windows would be the upper limit of your throughput, but with USB devices this doesn't seem to apply.

What speed is indicated by the 3G and 3.5G logos on my phone? And then also what would be the icon for HSDPA? Or how else would I know I am HSDPA covered?

3G and 3.5G are both generalised by the "3G" sysmbol that would pop up on the phone, only way of telling i reckon would be to test the speed, i stand corrected Ginngs?

After one of the firmware updates my N95 now shows "3.5G" when downloading at HSPDA speeds, when the connection is idle it drops back to "3G", just like the data cards. My guess is the newer N series mobiles would behave the same way.

You will only get HSDPA speeds using the phones web browser , you will not get it with the phone connected via USB to the computer and being used as a modem and reliable Nokia HSDPA modem drivers do not seem to exist.

That is incorrect.
From your link, further down:
However I did try a broadband test site and changing the maximum speed setting did not seem to make any difference. In fact the speed report was in excess of the maximum speed configured.
I'm getting between 1150 and 1350kbps (144 and 168 KB/sec) download and always 300kbps (37.5 KB/sec) upload using T-Mobile UK HSDPA, so the speed listed by the windows driver of 460kbps doesn't appear to be a limiting factor, which is good news!

Hmmm my 3G fone is giving me nice speeds. 45kbs downloading

Check while using the phones browser if your getting the right coverage.
The phones capable of getting all types of data.
I only get the E for edge icon if my phones on GPRS only make sure its on dual mode or 3G only.

The "Y" type icon is GPRS, E is edge, 3G is errr ye 3G and 3.5G icon is HSDPA 1.8 and 3.6Mbs.
