Does anybody out there know when the Nokia N 85 is being released over here? i currently have the N73 and i am gettin cheesed off with the amount of times it is freezing on me.... i'd like to stay with Nokia as my car kit works best with Nokia... and i am quite comfortable with the operating of the device..

The N73 is a rather nasty piece of phone. I only started to consider Symbian with the arival of the N82 (the successor to the N73).

Pehaps you should have a look at the N82, it is the only Nokia with a Xenon flash and it was such a good improvement over the N73 that I had to get my wife a N82 after she played with my N82 (she had used a N73ME for 5 months then).

The N85 has already been released in Singapore and a few other places worldwide. I expect you'll be able to import it sometime this month. Expect to pay around R6500 for it, partly because prices are inflated at release, and partly because our Rand-Dollar exchange rate is currently unfavourable.

Should be out mid to late Dec.
The N78 is also a good option, if you a symbian fan.
Real GPS 18 months free nav
HSDPA
3 Mp cam
New UI
FM radio modulator (play your MPs through your car/house radio
2GB SD card.

And its relatively cheap.

is it out in South Africa yet tho? i have been looking out for it and the 5800 too, but am still not aware of them being released... the E 66 also is quite nice, but i'd rather wait for the 5800 or N 85...

These things usually take a couple of months to reach SA. It is still being released in european countries so my guess is you wont see it available here, especially by the carriers until xmas

i've just ordered mine

Just ordered a N85 from mtn for R460 p/m on mtn anytime with R350 "Airtime" inclusive p/m. they said it would take about 10-15 days to arrive though :/

Not all phones take long to reach our shores.

The N96 was released in September and it arrived here November.

The N85 is a very cool phone too. If only the N96 had a OLED display.

while N82 is excellent choice for your pocket, I have to agree, the N85 is looking good, especially the display, but i have to the 5800 gets my vote

Well I went into an MTN branch and told them I'd like to order one for my upgrade in december and they were all blank stares. No-one there had ever heard of N85. I ordered it anyway and now must just wait and see what happens

will be crossing fingers for us both doonit :)

and @dudleygb

5800 is no doubt cool, but quite honestly i think the whole touch interface thing is a phase. i personally never owned an iphone but have an ipod touch.. surfing the web and that sorta thing might be cool for a while but eventually you're going to want some tactile response.

just got mine.. its beautiful.. :D
the whole mtn shop gathered around while i unboxed it hehehe

This sure is one beautiful phone. N85 should have been the N96. You're lucky to get one so soon. I'm everyone dying for some feedback about how the phone is to use so plz dont keep us waiting too long! Also whats the story with GPS maps on the n85? Free maps or do you need to pay?

The 5800 should only reach us by january. But who knows maybe we lucky.

ok so here we go
just for reference i had a n95 for a long while before getting the n85 so that's pretty much my benchmark. it was latest firmware v30 and running brilliantly

so..first impresssions.. the screen is absolutely stunnning, indoors. out in the sun i have to admit its not grand to look at as colours appear somewhat dull and faded

the buttons took me a day of getting used to which is pretty understandable. the menu, cancel and soft keys lack a bit of tactile feedback i feel but i've already gotten used to them

im not one to use gps but i opened maps and it located me at home very quickly

it HAS restarted on me, twice. both times while i was on mxit though(dono if that could have something to do with it 8-o

feature pack two isn't MUCH of an upgrade but slight improvements here and there are nice.

fm transmitter doesn't really work well even in the car. i find that if the phone isn't within a metre of the antenna it isn't very clear, which is disappointing
im pretty happy overal..its quite nice. oh and while im copying music to it via usb, IT CHARGES. thats ten points right there.

if anyone wants to know anything specific just ask :)

oh i have to mention this one though, apparently the top panel (the one with the call and end keys) on the n85 are glued on. No mechanical attachment as such. Unlike the N81's top panel 4 eg which is attached to the silver rim. Im not comparing the two phones. Just trying to let you know something. I know pretty well that the former is miles better

a few users at symbian freak have had that problem of the panel starting to fall off. That put me off that phone and more to the N96 or the HTC Touch Pro. I'm still trying to decide. Im taking one on an mtn anytime contract.

n85 now supported by NSU and v11.047 FW on the way

There is a huge choice out there.

My top 3 are:
1)Nokia N82 (I was a n73 user,All i see are improvements here)
2)N78
3)N79

My top 3 Candy bar phone's to last a few years.

Nokia maps are free free free. The only thing that must be payed for is turn-by-turn navigation, in other words, if you want your phone to be telling you "In three hundred meters turn left..." and you must subscribe for about R100/month. Most of the new S60 powered phones arrive with some free navigation out of the box. My wifes N82 came with two years of free nav!

Dont forget to install the map of South Africa on your memory card using Nokia's Map Loader. It'll save you quite a lot of data to have onboard rather than getting it off the web every time you you wanna find a restaurant nearby
