Nokia N95 @ iTalk

Surprisingly nobody tawkin bout the LG Prada, it beat the N95 in sales in the UK the last time I heard, but that success is obviously short lived :)

The same thing happened with the LG Chocolate,that fone sold because of it's look,a piece of junk. It happens all the time eg.if you have two girls ,a beautiful one and a brainy, but not so good looking, guys who u gonna choose.Prada is just another pretty face off the catwalk, but no features to go with it. You can't compare the Prada with the N95, they are worlds apart.It's the name thats selling not the phone."Devil's wear Prada".
 
when i first saw the specs of the N95 i really thought it one of these threads that people post saying what they would like in a phone and i thought its all a hoax ... Nokia really listened to their customers with this phone ... just wanna know know how do you clean the screen, where can i get a screen protector that fits this phone perfectly?

Get yourself a crystal case,it keep the phone clean and dust free.They go for between R59 & R79 @ cellphone shops.

GTi, do you perhaps know where to get crystal cases for the N95? I got one on Thursday but the plastic is too hard. It already has a crack and I didnt even bump it against something.

Hi Guys,

I have been following some of the threads on the N95 in this forum. I have been a Nokia fan for MANY years now. I currently have a 7610 and I am in month 20 of my contract, so now it is hunting time! :)
I have looked at several current offers, and at this stage it seems between either the N95 and the P990i. I will be switching my contract from MyCall100 to ProCall120, thus if I take the N95, will mean that I need to pay in R1k. I don't mind, as long as the GPS is worthwhile.
Now, guys like Piesang etc. that have your phones, what is the story with the Navigation? Every single person I speak to tells me a different story. The guy at the MTN shop in Menlyn, says that the mapping doesn't work at all (disabled. I think he is talking crap, how would Nokia allow this?), two seperate guys at Nokia I called says that there is no extra cost to use the navigation.
From what I have read is that once the maps are on your phone, whether you download them directly, or you via your PC, to use the actual navigation cost you money. (In the region of 80euro for a year, using South African maps) This I read on one of the Nokia websites. by navigation I mean the phone tells you, "In 300m, turn left".

Can ANYBODY confirm that this feature has to be enabled at an additional cost? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:

Here you go. This is the info I gave this morning at a MTN store in Canal Walk because it looks like the people working there also don't know.

Only thing I'm not sure about is if the SA map was preloaded on the phone or not. The reason why I say so is because I've downloaded the maps on my N80 and when I got my N95 I tried to download the maps again. The download didn't start and when I ran the maps software on my N95 the SA maps was there. So it could be that the maps was pre-installed or it good be that the maps was saved on my PC in the Maploader software and when I connected my N95 it was transferred to the memory card.

The GPS works like a dream. Sometimes it takes a bit long (1 - 3minutes) to get a GPS lock. But that's not really a problem. I was out of town this weekend and had to search a place. I search the address, made a landmark on my N95 and ask the software to plan a route.

It showed me the exact route but it doesn't give voice navigation. What I mean with it showed me the exact route is that it shows all the street names with the distance I have to travel each one and where I have to turn left or right. Only thing is that it is better to have someone driving with you to give you the voice navigation.

If you want voice navigation, like you mentioned a voice telling you 100 meters turn left, 70meters turn right, etc... then you have to pay for it once off.

That will cost you anything from $9 to $100 (estimates).

So in my opinion, the GPS is excellent.

Another thing that you must keep in mind is that software like TOMTOM is working on a software version that will work on the N95 that will pick up the built-in GPS. TOMTOM has got voice navigation installed already so you don't have to pay for navigation, you just have to purchase the software once off. That's what I'm waiting for.:D ;)

Thanx for the feedback. The fact that you have to pay for the navigation really blows!!!! I went and looked for the page that I saw the costs. See http://europe.nokia.com/A4353387, select "Costs" from the dropdown list. Look at point 2.5.

I understand that other software vendors are releasing software that will work on these platforms, but then I could use it on any platform. (SE, Nokia, etc. I will however ONLY look at Nokia or Sony Ericsson.) My contract expires soon, so that is why I am starting to do my homework. I need to make a choice by the latest end July. I am willing to wait as I am paying reduced subs of only R59 + CLI + ITB. :cool:

If I take the SE P990i at this stage above the N95, I save the once off R1k.
I know many of you guys are biased to your brand, but are there any pros and cons to the P990i, as it seems to be a fully featured phone. (And I can use a Bluetooth GPS receiver to make it GPS enabled!!!:D )

Look, the P990i is not a bad phone. The N95 is just better. (In my opinion).

If you only want a GPS then get yourself the P990i and spend R1500 on a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Now you must decide.

Free P990i + Bluetooth GPS (R1500) + Software (R1000) = R2500
or
N95 (R999)

With the N95 in mind you have a 5MP camera
A very good DVD quality Video Recorder
You get 1GB microSD. (I think you get a 64MB SD with the P990i)
The N95 is HSDPA enabled.

etc.....

Well, you decide.:D

you don't have to pay for the navigation, its free! you'd only pay for the voice activation.

so free GPS, u pay for a GPS voice.

The P990i is a business smartphone with support for Blackberry, etc - first and foremost - and a lot of other nice goodies. The N95 is a gadget phone, I would love to get one to use as my 'weekend phone' with a MyCall 100 contract.

So u saying Nokia shouldn't mix business with pleasure, Nokia just get better and new phones. SE just upgrade to i. Pity u will never know how to use a Nokia to it's full potential.:D

LOL @ Piesang!

I must admit, when I first held the N95 in my hand this morning, I was quite impressed. It is very light and the screen looks fabulous. Just a bit frustrating that I can't tap on the screen to open sub-menus.

Would LOVE to get one as my 'party & weekend' phone... :)

Must admit the N95 is very nice. Wish I-Mate can come out with something like that with Windows Mobile and a Qwerty keyboard he he he!

Get yourself a gmail account, install Gmail on your phone and you have your e-mail with you all the time. Who needs push mail.

I have a Jasjar. I still use it, but only for internet browsing when I'm to lazy to take out my laptop.:D

i-Mate makes excellent PDA's, but when it comes to the phone side of the PDA, then it is crap.

I had 3 i-Mates in 2 years. The i-Mate Pocket PC, the K-Jam and now the Jasjar. I know what I'm talking about.

A friend of mine has got a JASJAM, he's not happy either. He only want a N95 now after he saw mine.:D ;)
