Nokia N95 Maps License problem

I purchased a 3 year license for my Nokia N95 for voice guided navigation. However, EVERY TIME I go into Maps, and try use Navigation, it prompts me to purchase the software and it says I have a new Sim card and would I like to transfer my license! I go through the purchase steps, enter my license key and the navigation works, until the next time I try use navigation, when I have to repeat the whole process again. Basically it isn't saving the license information.

Does anyone else have this *very* irritating problem?

Maps navigation license problem

Hi Matt, I'm experiencing exactly the same problem. Neither my service provider nor Nokia can help. Further, so far, my N95 has never succeeded in reading a bar code. So much for a so-called "Flagship"!

Ok guys took the plunge and purchased the license for 3 years 79.53 Euros (R750) ...

Wrote down the license code given and entered my email address, got the confirmation e-mail from Openbit ...

I offed my phone and then turned it on again ... and everything is fine, voice guided nav still works with no need for me to re-enter a license key ...

Did you guys try contacting openbit or contact Nokia Global and let me know what happens

The Nokia FAQ, which im sure you guys checked also, but adding the url just in case

Also might wanna check this thread, people are annoyed by Nokia's arrogant stance on the license matter ... you get a new phone under warranty and according to the thread you need to buy another license as the license is locked to the IMEI and not the SIM ... i contacted Nokia care asking them if my phone ever were to be replaced under warranty, how do i transfer the license .. lets see if they reply

32k Sim - what do you have? Do you think it matters?

Also, where did you get your phone from? Normal SA (non grey) distribution? And what firmware do you have?

Thanks for the replies!

32K as well ... heard 9k and the 16k are problems ... my phone is local stock from MTN ... I have the 10.XXXX firmware ... did not update the firmaware as i read many people having problems with it and my phone is working just fine as it is ....

I read on those Nokia FAQ's something about locking the license code to the SIM when the sim is changed ... Are you prompted at all to do this? ... is it maybe under the options menu for you ...

EDIT: even though the phone was from MTN i am using a Vodacom SIM

Ok... no, I don't think it has anything to do with the Sim. If anything, people are complaining because the license is linked to the phone specifically, not the Sim, so when replacing the phone, the license is lost.

Everytime I go to Navigation, it tells me that the Sim has been changed, and do I want to use the license with the new Sim. The basic problem is that it is not saving its license data. I.e., it also prompts me to hide the disclaimer every time, despite me choosing 'yes'.

With regards to the firmware update, the new firmware has major fixes, and I am desperate to load it. This includes major improvements in the camera quality, which is definitely needed, as well as stability fixes. I have found the phone to be fairly buggy. Unfortunatley the firmware is not available for our region (whichever it is) but you can change the product region, and then it will work, as per

http://clear-nokia.blogspot.com/2007/05/nokia-n95-debranding-guide.html

Google the changelog for the firmware update, and you'll see the massive list of problems fixed with the new firmware

Quote from Nokia FAQ on Maps:

"5.7 Can the update feature be used as often as I like?
All purchases in the shop are locked to your SIM Card (MSISDN) and the IMEI Number of your device.

The transfer of the license is possible in the event of a SIM card change:

When you change your SIM Card and put it back into your device, start the application and go into the shop, you are asked automatically if you want to lock the licenses onto your new SIM card. You can change your SIM card as often as you like.

In the event of a device change, please contact the Nokia Customer Care."

Regarding the firmware upgrade read the following, certainly made me apprehensive to upgrade:

SIM cards

Hi all,

I too am looking at buying a N95 and I wonder if it is only related to some users. I can't make out if it is only MTN phones that have this problem. What SIM cards are you using. I heard once that these can be very different and some features depend on the SIM card one has. The SIM cards also have different versions. Any help would be useful before I go in and buy myself a gadget of frustration.

Any news on how to sort out the license load problem? Will the new firmware help? Is it available in SA?

I can report back the following: I changed my product code, and successfully upgraded to the new firmware. Note, this process was easy, and everything is working perfectly.

HOWEVER, it did not fix the problem. PLEASE can everyone call 08611 NOKIA and report this. The more people who complain the more likely we get a response

Nokia N95

Hi all my Nokia N95 buddies,

I've just purchased the "new" Nokia N95. What a fabulous phone...exept for the GPS Navigation app.

I bought the N95 for 3 reasons:
1. GPS Navigation (I always get lost)
2. 5 MP camara (which cool)
3. Memory

But I'm very disssapointed in the GPS app. It doesn't work as I thought it would. If I knew that, I wouldn't have paid all that money. I would have bought a normal GPS system and got a regular phone.

Is the software you can purchase woth it? I don't want to pay all that money and it is just as useless as the GPS Navigation.

But all in all, I must confess, it is the best phone I ever ownen...!!!!

Wikipedia
Firmware is defined as:
the computer program in a read-only memory (ROM) integrated circuit (a hardware part number or other configuration identifier is usually used to represent the software);
the erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM) chip, whose program may be modified by special external hardware, but not by [a general purpose] application program.[1]
the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) chip, whose program may be modified by special electrical external hardware (not the usual optical light), but not by [a general purpose] application program.

Does the Navigation work properly or is it waste of money.
How much does a full licesne cost around ?
Or is the 3yrs just to upgrade the software maps.

I'd like to know moree about this please

Richard - aside from the license key entering bug, the Navigation is excellent, and works like a charm. The upgrade is about R750, and is to give you voice-guided navigation. Beyond that, it is fully functional out of the box. Highly recommended

How many years is the license valid for does this include upgrades of city, roads, etc. I've not read the manual as yet. When I get home will waste about 1 hour-2hours reading and playing around with the phone to understand it :)

You can choice how long you want to purchase the license for. 3 years is around R750. The license is JUST for voice navigation. The software itself includes updates of maps, cities, roads, etc as part of the package.
