I've been lucky to play with both phones for some time now. I own the iPhone, and I received a pre-release N97 through work some weeks ago.

iPhone: 3G, running OS3, not jailbroken
N97: Out the box, no additional memory installed

After using both (not just calls either - e-mail, Internet, navigation, etc.) I have come to the conclusion that the N97 is an astounding device. It can do anything that the iPhone can do, and more. Here's where it is better than the iPhone:

- Battery life
- Text input
- Camera
- Navigation (does turn-by-turn)
- Memory (32Gb is a LOT)
- Lockscreen widgets
- Music store available for SA! (Though this isn't N97-specific)

But the iPhone is better with the following:
- Looks (I still want to lick mine!)
- General interface, especially with items like SMS, e-mail, etc.
- Apps (OVI store can't compete)

If I have to choose between the two, I still lean towards the iPhone, mainly because Nokia doesn't offer proper software for the Mac. Even getting iSync to work with the N97 was a pain, and took a lot more input from me than the average user would either know or be prepared to put in. For Mac users, there can be only one choice. If you are on PC, the N97 is probably the better device, though not by much!

Just got the iPhone and loving it :)

I find the Nokia S60 OS feels so outdated and rough around the edges. Going from a my old N95 8GB to an iPhone is such a pleasure IMO.
