Nokia N97

Design is killer

I don't have one yet, but I'm definitely getting one (my upgrade is in Oct).

The first thing that struck me was the combination of touch screen and QWERTY keyboard, both of which are features I've wanted in a phone for some time.

Then there's the WiFi and HSDPA, the nice big display, GPS, 32 GB internal storage, TV-out, the list goes on.

Btw. can anyone give feedback on their experience with the GPS? Is it permament, or do you eventually have to pay for using Nokia Maps or something?

i have 1 and its awesome..only got it yesterday..will play around with it today & see what it can do!

ok it does not include the tv-out cable (like the n95 8gb/5800) just so you know

interesting about tv-out. prob not that big a deal.

please post about the gps features if you can :)

it just feels like nokia's somehow managed to achieve an excellent balance of great features with this phone.

anyone tried out opera mini on this phone?

is the touch screen any good? I had an omnia, but the screen was not very accurate using your finger and had to press quite hard as compared to the iphone. Is the N97 any better?

im assuming that N97 has standard 3.5mm aux input ... if so, then N95,etc tv out cable might work with N97 ...

its like the 5800..which isn't 1 bit bad..takes a bit of getting used to but..yeah its awesome!

I read somewhere that it doesn't come with DivX support 'out the box', so ... does anyone know if it's possible to enable DivX?

Think of the possibilities when using TV-out !!

i had a divX player on my N95 8GB..watched the entire series of House:D

it will fit..will try soon..& report back!

ok got this phone on an MTN-anytime 200 contract at R359 pm with no pay-in ... (i aint too worried about the contract, just wanted the phone) .... my initial unbiased views are

Negatives:
1. Not the smallest phone around
2. Touch display is a little slow to respond and you need a few finger clicks or movements to get what you want or to get where you want the screen to move. The iPhone is still king in this regard by far. You kinda have to touch the screen with a little force to get things done on the N97
3. The phone has restarted, froze on certain applications even with the latest software update
4. For web-browsing would have loved the inverted mouse setup like in the iNN0V8 Samsung. So browsing with the cursor is a little cumbersome with movement only in a pure horizontal or vertical plane
5. Hate the way the battery cover must be removed, feels like it will break after some time

positives

1. beautiful clean display, brilliant colour reproduction,
2. Very well-made, solid construction, a class product even when off :)
3. despite my quirks with the touch screen the OS is responsive, well designed and laid out
4. 3.5mm output ... :)
5. Awesome music quality
6. 1 yr free Navigation license, just like the N95 8gig
7. R200 music voucher included in the package, R10 per song with latest song downloads

agree with you about the back cover..
touch screen..ok its not the best..but its not bad at all!

I think the whole slide-out keyboard design is absolutely awesome.

Have any other phones come out with this before? If not, this could be a trend setter :)
