What a piece of rubbish this nokia software updater is.

I had installed it last year but never got around to using it. My sister was having issues with her phone so thought best to update her phone to the latest firmware.

I run the program, 1st problem - New version of the software exists, so it wont let me do any upgrade without downloading 25Mbs to upgrade. Why cant it work on the older version, nonsense from nokia.

So i do that, do the install, for a 25Mb upgrade, the thing took forever to install, and needed a reboot.

So i finally get going and connect the phone, then start the firmware update, it needs to download another 35Mb. Kicks off the download, gets to about 5 Mb and dies, says the internet connection is not fast enough or the line is unstable, and it has tried several time to reconnect. I kick this off 3 more times and same story.

What is up with this thing - how crap is this software - i cant believe what a mission it is to do a firmware upgrade. Nokia needs to get their act together.

Anybody know a better way to do the firmware upgrade?

I also did the Software Updater yesterday.

The initial 25Mb download took about 5 minutes. After connecting the new phone, it automatically checks which software version is on the phone, and compares it to the latest update available.
There was a newer software version available, at 155Mb.

From starting the download to final installation total time was about 25 minutes.

The entire process worked flawlessly, and without a hitch.

Lucky for you man. I just had hassles with the thing, and all i had to download for the actual upgrade was 35Mb!!

Also recently upgraded the firmware on my E51 for the first time since getting it over a year ago, and now it seems as if the battery life is diminished, only lasting about 3 days, from the usual 5-7 days.

Even went out and bought a brand new battery for almost R600, and still the same thing.

Don't know what they did with the new firmware but it sucks!

I have had very different results with different phones. Sometimes the upgrade is smooth without hassles and sometimes it is a major mission. And I agree that Nokia must get their act together. Their software development is actually pathetic compared to their phone technology. Even their current message center can't access messages in other folders (non-default ones) - it is really pathetic. If I want to reorganize my messages I have to do it on the phone - why can't you use a computer with a full keyboard and large screen to do so?

Okay so i tried to do the upgrade again this weekend. Tried twice and the same results. While the application is downloading the new firmware it stops says some issues with the connection etc.

I have 384kbps adsl is this too slow? Anybody else done the upgrade on 384kbps? I cant believe there are issues with the line.

Any other way of upgrading the firmware, short of booking it in at a vodacare for a couple of days?

I wont book it into a vodacare if they threatened to neuter my Uncle jim. It never comes back the same, and they might tell you you have water damage or something :P

No, we've been failing to update firmware forever. NSU keeps crashing. :(

Yeah i am not keen on booking the phone in either. Nokia software updater doesn crash for me, it just stops downloading and moans about the line.

Depending on the phone you can update it from the phone itself. On my n81 i go to tools>utilities>device mgr. and I'm good to go.

If your phone and router support wi-fi then it would be easy to do without the ridiculous gprs/3g costs and the P.O.S nokia software updater
