This story starts when I buy some blades for my razor and find that though they look the same the fitting at the back is different - and I can't find a holder that supports these blades.

It also seems they are phasing out the blades I use as they are becoming harder to find.

So if it's time for a new razor , what do I get.

Is Gillette still the way to go

The blades for the new razors seem even more expensive than the old ones. Which is the best shave for value option ?

There's now a razor with a battery in it - what's with that ?

Gillette is a rip off, honestly you can get a better deal with schik.

I only used to use Gillette, then i saw this schik blade with a hair clipper on the end. The blades were 90 odd bucks for 4 while gillette was 149 or something stupid.

Best thing ever!!!!!!! You will be surprised how many uses a small little hair clipper has :D. Blades are also superb. Do not buy the orange gillette i cannot recall it name but the packing is orange, worst razor ever!!!!!! The green packaged one is very good. Comes with a battery and shakes, very cool until you realize it does F all :D.

I had a gilette mach3 the one with the battery, awsome shaver, then the mach5 came out and I bought it used it three times threw it away and went back to my mach3, the mach 5 with its four blades feels like it tears my beard, Ive also tried that orange bic thing that a rugby player is advertising in the magazines(cant remember who he is) but that thing cut open a tiny mole I have on my face. As far as I`m concered the mach 3 is the way to go.

Two blades work for me! Bugger these well marketed 3/4/5/6 blade options! Even the lubri-strip is just a money maker.

Ive tried that as well not a bad shaver, thing is I only shave every 3 days so my blades last long, and the mach3 feels better when I shave, this gilette is not bad though

I use a schik, switched from gilette and much happier, not so bad on my skin. I also have a phillips electric shaver but every time i use it i get crazy in growns.

So some votes for Shik, some for Gillette - but I like the Shik blades being cheaper.

Oh, and no votes for the battery thing or 4+ blades ;)

The Schick Quattro Titanium or Extreme 3 disposables are pretty decent/cheap if you are looking for conventional style razors.

been using a mach 3 for years now
recently switched to schick quattro with elec shaver thingy - its nice....
but if u dont shave everyday, it can become clogged, which sucks,
i shave bout twice a week and sometimes struggle to get the hair out of the blades
it seems the more blades the more closely spaced they are
they shud od stopped at three blades imo

More than 2 blades just clog up faster, making the cutting edge lose contact. People think more blades is an improvement, while it is a ploy to make you throw your blade away early, lol.

Will never go back to a multi-blade Gillette/Shick money-spinner. The first shave was a bit of a bloody affair, but now I'm convinced it's easier on your skin. And you can't really clog a single blade much.

You can still buy these ?

They are kinda wide for a van dyke type ....

I have to shave every morning and again in the evening if I'm going out, it really takes it out of your skin. I've been using Schick Quattro with the Schick Sensitive Gel for several years now, a blade lasts 2 weeks @ +/- R95 for 8 and the gel about 6 weeks @ +/- R40.

Agree with the comment about electric shavers (Remington, Philips etc), I also got a lot of in-grown bristles plus I always had to shave twice a day.

Shaving's such a drag :(

Twice a day ? Too much iron in the blood methinks ;)

At the price blades have to last at least 6 weeks for me - and that includes the missus' legs.

Agreed.
On a whim I bought myself a Lion safety razor from the local spar (only place I've seen that sell any type of safety razors from the 15+ shops I've looked at). It was a bit of a rough start, but it is a much more enjoyable shave personally and the blades are so much cheaper.
My Merkur Futur just arrived today and so far it is awesome :)

I've been using the same for several months now. They really are nice to shave with.
