Hey guys

Just need some friendly advice.

Ebucks came, only earned R110 this month and still on level 3.

Ive been aiming at all the ebucks partners.
Especially fuel.

Even upgraded my account from gold to premiere + premiere credit card, small overdraft.

I would of thought that with all this id atleast move up a reward level.

That being said the account upgrades were done like 2 October, would these changes only reflect next month?

Just need a guiding hand

Yes, next month.
Use the calculator on the ebucks site once you've logged in to play what-if

Something that im also not clear of, when swiping is it better to use credit card?

Always - both in terms of percentage paid, and in terms of tier points earned.

Again, check the calculator.

am like you OP, and from what ive seen,

if you spend more (swipes, fuel, partners shopping, savings, overdrafts) you'll get more.
people think ebucks are free, you (indrectly) pay for them, nothing is free...

so its a zero sum game, if you spend more on credit card, and on ect ect, youll earn more.

check the tips the ebucks tab on the FNB app,
ALL of it is saying spend more to move up tiers and earn more ebucks.

You are not correct. It's not a zero sum game.
The idea with ebucks is that you're going to spend that money anyway (ie, interest on your bond, life insurance, petrol etc).
The value I get from ebucks (R5200 this month - yes 52000 ebucks) far exceeds any charges I pay.

but how much do you spend? yes agreed you were going to spend that money anyway.
but if you had to downgrade to a more basic account, like gold and only have a CC
IE the minimum, would you still be earning those ebucks?

FNB isn't an angel, its not handing out money for free,
its a Bank, and a business at the end of the day,
cant keep pissing away money for nothing,

it needs to see benefit at the end of the day.
what that benefit is, one can guess.

look at something like airline points,
like our local SAA voyager program,

if you fly a lot, you earn LOTS of miles, for upgrades, car rentals ect ect...
but you need to FLY a lot first, it wont help somebody who flies infrequently

so ebucks is kind of the same thing,
if you spend a LOT, you'll earn a lot, nothing is for free out of the goodness of somebodies heart.

No I wouldn't earn the same on a lower tier account, but what is the relevance of that? Yes i pay more charges for private wealth, but those charges are literally a fraction of my ebucks earn.
I haven't inflated my lifestyle to earn more ebucks.
Sure someone on a very frugal lifestyle would earn a lot less, but that is not the definition of a zero sum game.

Big difference between this and a zero sum game. My bank costs are around R400pm, I earn about eB15000

zero sum game, no such thing as a free lunch.
agreed, if you were going to spend X and get Y, you are getting something here.
but you indirectly

but again, you need to SPEND first to EARN.
just like my example with the airline loyalty clubs,

if you fly a LOT, you'll earn a lot.
same thing with the smartshopper points people talk incessantly about,

sure if you SPEND a LOT, you'll EARN a LOT, no free lunch in this game.

You really don't know what a zero sum game is, do you?

It's pretty easy to guess where FNB's benefits come from:

Not having to spend as much moving cash around and restocking ATMs since their customers are swiping.
Card fees with swipes, that do not affect the end-consumer very much.
Making customers use the app instead of branches so the salary bill comes down.

@Belligerence - just note, it's actually easier to hit lvl5 on Gold than it is on Premier - but on Premier your potential to earn eBucks is bigger. It depends on your needs. I'm on Premier at the moment and I've been on lvl5 since I upgraded bar the month that I actually did the upgrade (poor timing on my part) so it is quite doable.

I spend roughly R6k in store per month, and around R2.5k online, plus just shy of R1k worth of petrol. I'll summarise my other tricks:

  • I also am on Fusion instead of Cheque + CC bundle. (Can't spend on the cheque card by mistake this way)
  • Don't use an ATM, only withdraw cash from cashiers if you need to (can be a pain but it's manageable)
  • I make sure to use R1000 of my credit facility (i.e. overdraft) every month. I do this by simply emptying the account into the savings account, plus R1200 or so (just to make sure that I've gone over the R1000 threshold) and then leaving it for a couple of days.
  • I do 4 app transactions per month (4xR10 EFT payments to other accounts under my control - Capitec, Tyme, African Bank, and wife's FNB account). You could just make sure to do whatever EFTs you were going to do anyway via the app, but IMO that's a pain and I prefer to do it on the desktop browser. So I just do four small ones to satisfy the requirement.
  • I make sure to increase the balance of my savings account by R1500 every month. If I'm planning to do any big spending that I need to withdraw from the account (such as buying tickets for the annual overseas trip or whatever) then I do it all at once, then I only lose those ebucks points once.
  • Open the "Maximise my rewards" section on the app and read what they have there fairly regularly. I generally do it just after ebucks are awarded, or if I'm really bored at any point during the month.
  • I have my son's FNBy account linked (1000 points free, literally nothing I need to do since he's too young to spend any money). You can get an extra 1000 points for your spouse, but my wife just uses my card anyway so she isn't on the spousal premier option, she just has an Easy account.
There are various other things you can do, if you have a home loan with FNB for example, or you can have them keep your will, or take out various insurance products, or FNB Connect as a cellular service provider. I personally don't, I find the above points sufficient to keep me comfortably on lvl 5. I have 13000 of the required 11500 points this month.

Good luck!

I spend roughly R6k in store per month, and around R2.5k online, plus just shy of R1k worth of petrol. This netted me roughly R560 worth of eBucks this month.

You're leaving out FNB charging stores for accepting their cards. I don't know if SA banks do it, but in the US higher tier cards (with better rewards) charge stores higher merchant fees. Some stores tried to stop accepting higher tier cards to get around it.

That's what I meant with my second point but I don't know the correct terms or details. Doesn't really affect the consumer very much.

I use a few of your points listed

1) Overdraft to pocket savings then back into overdraft
2) 4 App transactions
3) R1500 +into savings
4) Maximise rewards read on app
5) FNBY account
6) on FNB connect

Quick question, would scheduled transfers count to the 4, thinking of automating it

On the calculator, I only just make it over level 4 but tested on Gold at could make level 5 :( wtf
It is muuuuch easier to reach level 5 on gold.

Gold fusion, R500+ online spend, R1500+ total spend, cash@till withdrawal and viewing the "maximise my rewards" tab on the app is all you need to hit level 5
