I was thinking about gettign this game this weekend. Do I have to buy the expansion as well?
 
You can start out with the first one and then later buy the expansion if you decide you like it.
 
Are you talking about "Factions" ? It's not really an expansion, it's a new/seperate game. You can probably buy Factions FIRST , without ever having Prophecies. Prophecies is however the better one to learn the game as it is slower to start of, Factions' campaign is much faster.

Factions' also is not an "extension" campaign in the sense that you take your fully buffed up lvl 20 character from the original game and continue with that campaign. It's a new campaign meant to be played from lvl 1.

Prophecies [the original] got a single player/coop campaign in a certain world with a theme [the typical medieval theme], a few classes to pick from a few arena types for PvP etc.

Factions got ANOTHER single player/coop campaign in an entirely different world with another theme [very asian theme], ALL the classes from Prophecies plus 2 more classes and then all the usual goodies you would get in an expansion.

If you have both, you get more character slots and you can "eventually" move your character between the campaigns aka "worlds" of Prophecies/Factions if you complete a campaign.




You will also notice Prophecies and Factions will both cost full price [i.e. R300] . Which also indicates that they are almost independent games.

Get the first one (Prophecies), it's a good place to start. Also i think there's alot more people in the original than in Factions (in the campaign itself), to group with etc etc. Or rather i'd wager that most people who got Factions will have Prophecies too and thus have their main characters in Prophecies.

Besides end of October the 3rd "version" is coming out, called "Nightfall". It's probably going to be exact same setup as Factions [new campaign, new classes, but got everything factions+prophecies got]. So you might just want to skip straight to that if you want

More simpler answer: If you don't like Prophecies, you won't like Factions.

I first did Factions with one of my Prophesies characters before I started a new character in factions, so one can certainly carry on with characters, treating it as an expansion. Or one can treat Factions as a new game, which I also did for another character.

True, i rather meant you will not be able to gain further levels . You will go over a s a max level character into a campaign which is clearly meant to be played from lvl 1. So you probably will only do it to gain items/spells and
quest related stuff ?

Of course i'm talking about the campaign, not the PvP deal..that's another story ;).

Yes, but even in the first campaign, one often reaches the maximum level less that half way through in any case, so leveling is a fairly minor aspect of the game for me. And when moving an existing character over to factions, one starts factions at the third mission, where one has to be close to maximum level in any case to be able to survive it. (One can then walk that character back to the first two missions, if one wants to complete them as well, but they are not that much of a chalange for a max level character.)
 
I actually like the pace of Factions. I am mostly playing this these days. I move to Prophecies if I want to get something specific and so on...
 
Im going to go against the norm here and suggest you rather start with factions. Its easier to level up, and get nice eq. Prophecies can get tedious at times, where in Factions the action starts from the beginning. Its harder, but more rewarding in the long run. You can always transfer your factions char over to Propechies. Just get a runner to take you to Ascalon and you can still complete all the missions.
 
I agree with LilDeath and dak. I started with Factions and I really appreciate the faster pace in comparison to most RPG's.
