Mahikeng - A farmer was shot dead in Buffelshoek on Monday morning, North West police said.

The 49-year-old man and his wife were milking cows in their dairy when they were overpowered by about five armed men, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

The dairy is roughly 70 metres away from the couple's farmhouse.

"They were both taken back to the farmhouse where there was a confrontation between the suspects and the farmer. He was shot in the head from behind."

He died on the scene.

"His wife was taken inside the house and tied up. She was assaulted ... on her head with a blunt object," said Ngubane.

The gang fled in the farmer's car. The woman was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Shot in the back of the head does not sound much like an confrontation - more like cold blooded murder, and the wife tied upped an murdered with blunt object confirms it.

Hmmm it doesn't say she was murdered, she was assaulted with a blunt object. I am not sure what confrontation occurred but it would be interesting to find out. The trouble is a farmer doesn't know whether they will murder him or not, so if the farmer does nothing he will still possibly die, if he does something and gets killed then people will say he should have done nothing.

You are correct, sorry I misread about the wife.
And yes you should never go down without an fight, the more people do that the more criminals will think twice before commiting these crimes.

So tell me, would it makes sense to fight 5 armed criminals who will kill you in an instant? Perhaps you have watched too many hollywood movies, in real life they don't talk you to death, they take out their guns and blow your brains out.

The biggest issue is they may do it even if you don't fight. In this case though perhaps they may not have killed anyone considering they never killed his wife.

Well, the first few seconds of such situations is the most crucial before the criminals take control. There are a lot of instances where just screaming as hard as you can have discouraged criminals from doing what they intended. Being 5 criminals might not have stopped them, but still I'm sure there had to be other workers on the farm that could have heard them, and who knows what could have transpired.
 
Bring back the death penalty and take all laws away that prevent SA Citizens from protecting ourselves and which protect the murderers.

Had they known they would be hung for this I doubt they would kill so easily, instead they get long term board and lodging.

I think he may have been worrying about his wife possibly getting raped and just reacted.

Yup like i said he is in a catch 22, he does nothing his wife gets raped and murdered or they both live with nothing more than a few bruises. It's a split second thing but you have to access the situation and let's be honest unless you are chuck norris you ain't taking down 5 armed robbers.

Sadly it's those kinds of decisions people are force dot make though and it never really ends well.

I think you are going overboard with the genocide theory, why didn't they shoot his wife as well? Or is only male genocide now. What about the other 49 people murdered today, also genocide?
 
Do they ever mention the profession of other murder victims in news stories?
