Northcliff tower

guys, this thread was more about does it work or not, rather than the speed

My speed is bad but this my least problem, for me it does not work!

I had my ip address changed 49 times for the last 24 hours, this caused all connections to be dropped every 30 min approximatelly, I can't browse and download simultenously, I can't use P2P, ICQ breaks so bloody often as well ... so for me this **** does not work at all. It is not about speed, it is not working! I used my dial-up modem this weekend so I downloaded some stuff that I couldn't from my "broadband" iburst crap!!!

So, is it only me having all this problems?

I got iBurst hoping that it will perform as 24x7 dial-up connection or better, this is what I need and I was going to be happy if it was performing like that! But no, it isn't. It is performing far far worst than a dial-up!!! I feel pleasure using dial-up now, I appreciate it soooo much! It is so reliable!!! I wish telkom didn't charge for local calls, I would have stayed with dial-up forever!!!!! It rocks compared to iBurst!!

Swordfish1,

I can understand your frustration. I am experiencing problems similar to yours. I work from home 2 days a week and just FTPing to the server in town is a mission so I avoid doing it altogether. I tried talking on Skype to my family and friends abroad - it doesn't work. Downloading through HTTP from abroad is not worth it .. and I don't use P2P file swapping so I wouldn't know.
Bottom line is, I am now using my iBurst connection to keep a watch on my work email (my WBS email doesn't work at all - I can't login) and for browsing. MSN works but sometimes people have to wait for 5 minutes for my reply. Last night I tried playing Poker on Yahoo and people booted me off for late response times (because of the connection)... What can I say? I can go on and on about it. You can check the April survey thread at the top - I mentioned there the whole story as I know it from WBS helpdesk of the Northcliff tower. I asked Shaun Green last week if they are willing to reimburse me for my purchased modem (so I thought we can forget I was ever their customer and just go back to Telkom dial-up) - he never came back with an answer.
I don't know how to cope with WBS anymore. Where I come from we have choice and competition so if I a company behaves like this they would loose their customer base in a month. So I just think, ok this is Africa, I guess I'll have to put up with it (Joburg doesn't have a decent public transport let alone broadband infrastructure).
No offence meant neither for WBS, nor for Joburgers. :-)

if you can't login to your WBS mail account try adding @wbs.co.za to your username, and we have a pretty good criminal infrustructure in joburg at least, I mean its not public transport but its something (besides if you need a cheap effective means of transport you can just jack someones car)

Nope Slimothy, I've tried adding the wbs.co.za thingie before and today (in faint hope -- though who needs their email) ... doesn't work!

jack someone's car? And get shot, bitten by a dog, electrecuted on a fence ... sweared at in Afrikaans and zulu ??? ... no way :-))

Anyone experiencing very slow speed on Northcliff tower since monday?
I can get an maximum of 80kbps download about 8-10KB/s and i still have 2.7GB of my cap...ah this is unacceptable....
Is anyone experiencing the same slow speed?

My speeds have dropped and I live approx. 2km from the tower-I have direct line of sight visibility as well.

I phoned Tsepho at WBS, who said I was the second one to complain and that he would now advise a techie and get back to me today.

I am on a 9Gb package and virtually have no speeds on P2P as well. I also have installed the fix for SP2 which allows for more P2P connections. I am also running ADSL 512 on the same machine and tested those torrents and I get full speed and many peer connections.
What is going on?

Well i think they started shaping and the P2P of LimeWire...i used to get about 30KB/s one week ago now i can get only 1KB/s...this is sick!

fairlady, it is sad but this is how it works in SA.

I got an email from Dylan today, saying that I should not use P2P. I never heard of an ISP that is telling you how to use your internet up to now. This is completely unacceptable by all standards! This people should be out of business long time ago! I will make everything possible to make them lose as many customers as possible. I am going to tell every single person I meet from now on to run away from iBurst, as far away as he(she) can! I will make them feel sorry for their absolute disregard for their customers.

I`ve caled WBS now and they`ve told me that Northcliff tower has an problem and the people from wbs are there to investigate the problem...Why the hell they just investigating stuff they have to fixed but they never do.....so who knows maybe by 2010 they will fix it:(
